Meet Melisa & Irene

We were lucky to catch up with Melisa & Irene recently and have shared our conversation below.

Melisa , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome hit me hard when we first started The DM Duo. I remember looking at other agencies and thinking “Who are we to do this?” even while delivering amazing work. What helped me overcome it wasn’t a single moment, but a mix of very real, very unglamorous things, like showing up every day, learning as we went, and proving to ourselves that we could actually do this.

For me, it clicked the first time a client came back and said, “You’ve made such a positive difference in our business” It was such a simple phrase, but it felt like a permission slip to own the space we were already standing in. I realized imposter syndrome doesn’t go away because you magically gain confidence, it goes away because your work starts speaking louder than your doubts.

And Irene felt the same way. We’ve had so many conversations where we’d look at each other like, “Are we really doing this?” And the answer kept being yes. Every deadline we met, every problem we solved at 2AM, every client who trusted us with their brand chipped away at that little voice that said we weren’t “ready” yet.

And honestly, we still feel it sometimes. Every time we have to talk to a new client, both of us get this tiny chest-tightening moment, like a mini panic attack mixed with pure discomfort. We keep waiting for that feeling to disappear, but it hasn’t. The difference now is that it doesn’t control anything. We power through it, and thank God it has never had the power to stop us from moving forward. The second we start talking about what we know best, it’s like the switch flips. We forget the nerves were even there.

Over time, we stopped trying to feel worthy and simply kept acting like the people the business needed us to be. Somewhere in the middle of all the messy, chaotic, hilarious moments that come with running an agency, we grew into those roles. Not because imposter syndrome disappeared, but because we stopped giving it the mic.

Today, we still have moments of “wow, this is big,” but instead of questioning if we belong, we take it as proof that we’re growing. And honestly, that’s what we’re most proud of, the fact that we built this by trusting ourselves even when it was uncomfortable, and by lifting each other up on the days the doubts felt loud.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s this: you overcome imposter syndrome by moving anyway. And one day you look back and realize… you’ve become the person you were trying so hard to be.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Irene and I run The DM Duo, a boutique creative and digital marketing agency based in Miami. We help businesses show up online the way they deserve to be seen: intentional, clear and elevated. We focus on branding, web design, content creation and full digital strategy, but what really makes our work special is how personal it is. When you work with us, you actually talk to us. No chat boxes, no automated replies, no layers of people you never meet. Just real conversations, real strategy and real care.

We started this business with just the two of us 4 years ago, working out of our homes and figuring things out along the way. Today, we have a team of eight incredible specialists who help us bring every project to life. Seeing how much we’ve grown still feels surreal sometimes, but it also reminds us why we do things the way we do. Even with a bigger team, we stay boutique on purpose. Every client gets our attention, our brains and our creativity. They feel supported, not shuffled around.

What we love most about what we do is watching clients finally feel proud of how their brand looks and communicates. When a business tells us they are getting better leads, more clarity or more confidence, that is everything to us. Creativity for us is problem-solving, storytelling and understanding people. No two projects ever feel the same, and that keeps us inspired.

Right now, we’re also expanding our services with something we are very excited about: ChatGPT Business Listings. AI and search are changing quickly, and we want our clients to be ahead of the curve. We are helping businesses create their verified listing inside ChatGPT and building custom GPTs that act like virtual assistants for their brand. It is a completely new space for visibility, and we are proud to be one of the first boutique agencies offering it in a thoughtful and strategic way.

We’re continuing to grow our team, refine our processes and take on projects that challenge us creatively. Every season feels like a new chapter for us and for our clients.

If there is one thing people should know about our brand, it is that we genuinely care. We care about the work, the people behind each business and the impact a strong digital presence can have. We built The DM Duo with intention, and that is exactly how we show up for every client who trusts us with their story.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three things that made the biggest difference for us weren’t fancy skills or certifications. They were qualities we had to build while growing The DM Duo.

The first one is adaptability. This industry changes fast, clients change, platforms change, strategies evolve. Being willing to learn, test, pivot and not take things personally has been huge for us. Our advice for anyone starting out is to stay curious. Learn the tools, learn the trends, but also learn how to think for yourself. Adaptability becomes your superpower when you stop being scared of the unknown.

The second one is communication. Not perfect grammar or corporate talk. Real communication. Being able to explain ideas clearly, set expectations, ask the right questions and be honest with clients even when the conversations are uncomfortable. Anybody early in their journey can improve this by practicing transparency, owning mistakes quickly and being genuinely willing to listen.

The third one is resilience. People talk about resilience like it’s this big dramatic thing, but honestly, it often looks like staying calm when everything is on fire, or trying again the next morning even if the day before drained you. When we started, it was just the two of us doing everything. Now we have a team, but that resilience still shows up every day. For anyone starting out, the best way to build resilience is by doing the hard things even when you don’t feel “ready.” Confidence comes from evidence, and evidence comes from action.

If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need to be perfect to start. You just need to be willing to grow, communicate clearly and keep going even when it feels uncomfortable. Those three qualities will take you further than any tutorial or course ever will.

How would you describe your ideal client?

Our ideal client isn’t defined by industry or size. We work with clients of every kind, from large corporations to family-owned businesses to freelancers building their brand from scratch. For us, it’s all about mindset. The clients we work best with are the ones who genuinely care about their business and are ready to invest in doing things the right way. They’re open to ideas, they trust the process and they understand that good strategy and good creative take time, intention and collaboration.

We also need clients who understand that this has to be a partnership. For us to build the right online presence for them, we need their feedback, their input and their honesty. We can’t deliver work and then wait a month for a response. When clients are present and engaged, the results are completely different. It sounds funny, but it’s true: crafting a digital presence is personal. Their business is their baby and we need them involved so we can represent it the right way.

Respect for our expertise is another big one. They don’t need to fully understand what we do in order to respect it, but they do need to recognize that it isn’t “just taking a picture and posting it.” We’ve had clients in the past who wanted the services only because “everyone is doing it,” but deep down didn’t think they needed it or didn’t see the strategy behind it. The clients who benefit the most are the ones who understand the value of the work even if they don’t know every step behind the scenes. They trust us to guide them and give the work the intention it deserves.

We love clients who communicate openly and are willing to share their goals, their challenges and even their doubts. The best work happens when we all feel comfortable talking about what’s working and what isn’t.

At the end of the day, our ideal client is someone who sees us as partners, not vendors. Someone who wants a long-term relationship, not a quick fix. Someone who is ready, involved and committed to building a brand with intention. Those are the clients we show up for with everything we have.
