Meet Melissa Corbin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melissa Corbin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melissa below.

Hi Melissa, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose in helping people feel like their best selves. It is such a joy to soften lines, to help correct asymmetries (natural or trauma related) and to restore volume loss because it makes people feel confident and unstoppable.

It changes the way that people see themselves, the way that other’s see them and ultimately the way they view the world. We greatly underestimate the power of presenting our best selves each day. When we look good or fix something that is bothering us, we feel good and our inner beauty shines through. This is my purpose.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Board-Certified Physician Associate and expert injector at PSS Medispa in Annapolis. I perform comprehensive cosmetic evaluations and advanced cosmetic procedures, including Botox, Dermal Filler, Photo Light Treatments for pigmentation, redness and skin tightening and C02 Laser resurfacing for deep lines, acne scarring and overall texture. This is a very special field because when you think about it, it is facial art. People come from all over the country and trust me with their face to get a natural but effective result.

A new and exciting procedure that I love is jawline filler. I use a combination of needle and cannula (flexible needle) to lift the skin on the jawline. My new favorite product is called Juvederm Volux. It is so strong and effective. It makes such a difference in facial laxity without surgery or the down time.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Education (specifically anatomy), hands-on training, and mentorship were most impactful in my journey. Knowing facial structures like vital arteries, veins, nerves and muscles is extremely important when injecting the face. I had my initial hands-on training through my PA school rotations, and then at the NLI (National Laser Institute) and continue to do multiple trainings every year to further enhance my skills. I was lucky to have several wonderful mentors in medicine and injectables. Having people who believed in me, taught me and took me under their wing has made me the injector I am today. I love to mentor people starting out in the PA field and give just about everyone my email in case they have questions about the field. I also love teaching. One day, I would love to be a trainer for Allergan (my favorite injectable company).

My advice for anyone interested in the field is to know you can do it. Learn as much as you can, go to all the trainings, study your anatomy, never stop growing as a provider and never give up. Find someone who is passionate about injectables and shadow them. You can do it!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has been my confidence and forwardness about what will be most helpful to my patients. 10 years ago when I first started out, I would focus on the main complaint, try to spread one syringe over the entire face at my patients request and be hesitant to suggest a full face correction because of cost. People would try to pressure me to bring the price down on my services and quite often, I would. While I often give discounts and try to help people out, I am confident that my services are worth the price. You are paying for the provider and their skill and knowledge is equally if not more important as the product. I’m happy to give different treatment options (good, better and best) and to work with all budgets but I want my patients to get the best result which usually takes multiple syringes and I discuss multiple treatment options and areas with all of my patients.
