We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have always loved stories. More importantly, I have always loved listening to people tell their stories. So, after teaching and raising a family for almost 25 years, I knew I wanted to help people in the stuck parts of their story. I knew I needed to have a quiet spot of my own and the knowledge and skills to help people ‘move the needle’ in their stories so that their lives would be better and ,in turn, their families and communities.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a marriage and family therapist with over 25 years of experience working as a teacher with families, children and teens. I work with various parts of family dynamics such as: helping during the adolescent and teen years, cultivating interpersonal relationships such as parents and children, and working with married (or partnered) couples. Families are constantly changing and I find joy in helping people as they transition to different stages and ages in life. I also find that sometimes families need help through tough times such as grief or trauma and I can be a safe place to land in the midst of difficult seasons.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful parts of my journey to become a therapist were my years of working with teens and families and wanting to go beyond the school setting to help them become stronger, noticing the gift I had in listening and helping create stronger connections with people, and lastly pursuing a strong understanding of family issues, growth, and change through my getting my masters degree from Trevecca here in Nashville, Tennessee.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents provided a safe and secure place to grow and explore the world. I never had to worry about their love for me. I knew that even when I made a mistake, that they would be there to support me through it. I knew that they wanted the best for me and that I would need to figure out what that looked like. Their support in my many adventures gave me a place to learn who I wanted to be in this world.
