We were lucky to catch up with Melissa & Melissa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa & Melissa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think we both get our resilience from our difficult journeys in life. We both started life younger than most, being teenage mothers on our own and having to do any and everything in our power to support our children and raise them in a better environment than what we were. Although we did not meet until later in life, our stories are incredibly similar and it is one of the main things that created our strong bond.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We met bartending about 9 years ago and immediately became family. Over the years we worked together as M&M The Dynamic Duo at work and at home we started doing balloon decor for the many family parties we threw together. At some point, we started getting asked to make creations for other friends and family and eventually for events at the bar we worked at. One day it just clicked with us that we could combine our creative party decor with our many years of bartending experience and create a business out of it. Who doesn’t want beautiful decorations as well as experienced friendly bartenders for their events?!?! I know we do! So that was the beginning of M+M Make it Pop LLC. We decided on this name as a reference to popping balloons and popping bottles, a little play on both aspects of our business.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Our tenacity and drive to make whatever needs to happen, happen is definitely a contributor to us being successful. Along with our many years experience in customer service, bartending, and management are imperative aspects to our success. Add in our love of our kids and families that has inspired our balloon creations and we had all we needed to be successful in our new adventure of owning a small business.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
We would say our children; from the time we were essentially children they have been the drive to be the best we can be for them. They have given us the strength to overcome things most people can not imagine and the need to succeed in order to give them the best lives possible. These things have created a culture of failure is not an option for the both of us and our children will always be our greatest success and the stem for all our strength.
