Meet Melissa Metoyer

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Metoyer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Reflecting on my journey and the path I carved with Phoenix Junction Kids Wellness, my ability to communicate effectively was cultivated through a combination of experiences, teachings, and introspections:

Multifaceted Background: My upbringing exposed me to diverse perspectives, languages, and communication styles from a young age. This diversity shaped my approach and sensitivity to different audiences, enhancing my adaptability in communication.

Academic Training: My Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling were crucial. These fields inherently emphasize the importance of effective communication, listening skills, and understanding human behavior. The formal education I received laid the groundwork for my professional interactions.

Clinical Experience: My tenure at Children’s Medical Center and my private practice played a pivotal role. Engaging with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary team of professionals required clarity, compassion, and precision in communication. Here, I honed my ability to explain complex concepts in relatable terms, making information accessible and understandable.

Feedback and Active Listening: I made it a point to solicit feedback regularly, both from colleagues and those I served. Actively listening to others allowed me to understand different perspectives, refine my message, and ensure it resonated effectively.

Continuous Learning: Recognizing that effective communication is an evolving skill, I invested in workshops, seminars, and courses on interpersonal communication, and even digital communication platforms.

Advice for others: Communication is a two-way street. It’s as much about listening as it is about speaking. Regularly put yourself in situations where you must communicate with a diverse group of people. Seek feedback, practice regularly, and always be willing to adapt and learn. Remember, every interaction is an opportunity to learn and refine your communication skills.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
At the heart of Phoenix Junction Kids Wellness, lies a story not just of transformation, but also of hope, compassion, and the incredible power of a child’s perspective. Our foundation was built upon a single, innocent plea from a child, Phoenix, who questioned why the world couldn’t be taught kindness. This tender query set forth a whirlwind journey of discovery, innovation, and purpose.

What sets Phoenix Junction apart, and what truly excites us, is our unyielding dedication to nurturing not just the physical, but also the emotional and mental well-being of children. Our programs seamlessly integrate research-backed techniques, experiential learning, and the powerful language of love, ensuring that children emerge not only confident and compassionate but also emotionally literate. This holistic approach towards children’s wellness, where every activity – be it storytelling, art, or yoga – is meticulously designed to resonate with every facet of a child’s being, is what makes our mission truly special.

Moreover, our commitment extends beyond our immediate purview. Recognizing that it takes a village to raise a child, we’ve established the Community Partnership Collaborations. Through this initiative, we’ve teamed up with community businesses that share our core values and commitment to children’s emotional well-being. These collaborations are not just partnerships; they’re a powerful alliance of “Kindness Ambassadors”. By uniting our strengths with these community brands, we’re amplifying our mission. It’s our way of showcasing to the world that kindness isn’t just an abstract concept, but a tangible force that can shape our actions, decisions, and the very world we inhabit.

In the spirit of community and inclusiveness, we’re proud to announce our upcoming endeavors. As we expand and collaborate, our community can expect tailored experiences, workshops, and events that reflect both our ethos at Phoenix Junction and the unique brand essence of our partners. Together, we aim to create a synergistic environment where mutual respect, kindness, and empathy are at the forefront.

If there’s one thing, we want our readers to know about Phoenix Junction, it’s that we genuinely believe in the transformative power of emotional well-being. To all parents, guardians, educators, and anyone vested in the emotional journey of a child, know that we’re here for you. If you have questions, need guidance, or simply wish to share a story, our doors and hearts are always open. After all, in the quest for emotional wellness and a kinder world, every story, every child, and every emotion truly matters.

But at the very core, the heart and soul of Phoenix Junction is Phoenix herself. Her embodiment of kindness and compassion, her innate understanding of human connection, and her belief in the transformative power of small acts of goodness represent everything we stand for. Through her eyes, we’re reminded of the universal language of kindness, compassion, and empathy that transcends barriers.

In summary, Phoenix Junction is more than a brand. It’s a movement towards integrated children’s wellness, fueled by a mother’s love and a child’s dream of a kinder world. It’s a place where love and kindness converge, where every child is celebrated and nurtured, and where the seeds of self-love and well-being are sown early in life. Through Phoenix Junction, we’re inspiring a generation, ensuring every child rises, fortified by love, and grounded in kindness.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, there are undeniably three standout qualities that I believe were instrumental in my progression, both professionally and personally:

Emotional Intelligence: Understanding my emotions and the emotions of others, particularly my daughter Phoenix, was key. My ability to empathize, connect, and communicate effectively with Phoenix, clients, and colleagues played a pivotal role in both my personal growth and the inception of Phoenix Junction.

Dedication to Lifelong Learning: The ever-evolving landscape of mental health and children’s wellness required constant education. From my academic endeavors to specialized trainings, staying updated with the latest knowledge and methodologies was crucial.

Resilience: The path was not always easy. There were challenges, both emotionally and professionally, but it was my resilience and the unwavering support from loved ones that helped me push forward, even during the toughest times.

Advice for those starting their journey:

Cultivate Emotional Intelligence: Start by actively listening. When you listen, you understand. Seek feedback and be open to it. Over time, you’ll begin to understand yourself and others better. Books, workshops, and even counseling can help in honing this skill.

Never Stop Learning: The world is constantly changing. Be a voracious reader, attend seminars, and network with professionals in your field. Investing in your education, both formal and informal, is an investment in your future.

Embrace Challenges: Challenges are a part of growth. When faced with adversity, remind yourself of your “why”. For me, it was Phoenix’s simple yet profound question. Find your anchor and hold onto it. Surround yourself with a supportive community or mentor who can offer guidance, perspective, and encouragement.

Remember, every journey is unique. Stay true to your vision, embrace the lessons along the way, and always lead with love and kindness.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
In reflecting upon my journey with Phoenix Junction Kids Wellness, I owe an immense debt of gratitude to several individuals and experiences that have shaped me:

Phoenix: My daughter has been my compass. Her innocent questions, her perspective on the world, and her resilience taught me the importance of kindness and emotional wellness. Every time I felt uncertain, it was Phoenix’s unwavering belief and clarity that guided me. Her genuine spirit compelled me to better understand emotional literacy, not just for her but for every child out there.

Mentors and Colleagues: During my tenure at Children’s Medical Center and later in private practice, I had the privilege of working with experienced professionals and mentors. Their guidance, constructive feedback, and shared experiences equipped me with clinical skills, leadership qualities, and a deeper understanding of the field of mental wellness.

My Mother and Father: As the unseen pillars in our story, their wisdom, patience, and constant encouragement have been invaluable. I am profoundly grateful to my parents for providing my brother and me with an unshakable foundation of love and understanding. Their embodiment of a healthy family unit and their unwavering work ethic have been our guiding stars. Through both words and deeds, they exemplify the depth and breadth of love, teaching us the true essence of family. Their teachings reminded me of the importance of family, nurturing relationships, and being present for one’s child.

The Community: Engaging with parents, educators, and children provided real-time insights into the challenges and gaps in children’s wellness. Their stories, experiences, and feedback were instrumental in refining Phoenix Junction’s programs and approach.

Advice for others: Surround yourself with people who believe in your mission and understand your passion. Lean on mentors and colleagues for advice, and never underestimate the power of genuine, ground-level feedback from your community. Lastly, find inspiration in the everyday; sometimes, the most profound insights come from the most unexpected sources.
