We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Rose Cooper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa Rose, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I definitely credit my work ethic to my parents. Both of them are from Trinidad and didn’t grow up with a lot of money. So as adults, they made it their mission to provide for their children as best as possible, which included many days of hard work. I learned early on in life there will always be times where sacrifices need to be made to accomplish a goal. It’s a lesson I have always kept at the front of mind and one that continuously pushes me to reach for my dreams.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an award-winning journalist and content creator residing in NYC. For over the past decade, I’ve had the chance to share stories that really matter to the community. And in 2021, I started my content creation journey, focusing mostly on travel but now also highlighting some of my other passions, like hair and food.
The common love I have for both my career as a journalist and content creator is storytelling. I truly feel honored to not only be able to give others the platform to make their voices heard, but also to inspire others to create their own journeys.
Right now, I’m pretty excited about a new project I’ve been working on called “It’s Pretty Good with Mel.” It’s a food show featuring different eateries in and around NYC that will soon be available on streaming platforms. My business partner and I came up with the idea nearly a year ago and I’m getting to show off so many of my other hats other than just the talent and host. I can’t wait!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the ability to listen, communicate and empathize are three qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey. Storytelling is at the heart of anything I do. And if I don’t have these qualities down, there’s no way I can tell someone’s story or share an experience authentically. These are also just qualities I believe can be applied to all parts of life. So as cliché as it might be, I would try to tell others to never judge a book by its cover and do their best to exercise patience.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
As I continue to grow as a journalist and content creator, I am always looking to collaborate! I really think traveling is the ultimate form of education so I would love the opportunity to partner with more tourism boards. I am open to going anywhere but I really would love to explore more of Africa. I studied abroad in Senegal when I was in college and I’ve always had a desire to explore more of the continent as well as show others why they might want to visit as well.
