Meet Melissa Roth

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Roth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Melissa, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I grew up in a home where graduating from high school and going straight to college was the plan. It was important to my parents, so it became important to me. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I went anyway. I got to college and after 2 years, realized I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I took a break. Even though it was always important to my family for me graduate, my parents always encouraged my creativity and doing something I was passionate about. That message always stuck with me, and allowed me to try new things all the time. I believe this is how I found my purpose. I had a silly business called Sew In Love before Union Stitch & Design was born. I learned a lot starting out that way, but I was ok with starting again because I always knew I could start over as many times as I needed to. I found my purpose by failing, and then starting again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I design, sell and sew aprons for restaurants all over Colorado and some other places around the country. One of the most exciting parts is working with restaurants to make aprons that fit their style and needs. In the new year, we will continue to add new fabrics and designs to keep up with whatever the new trends might be.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Flexibility, Patience, and Dedication have been a crucial part of my journey. There are more small businesses than ever, and staying current with social media and trends can be a daunting task. For people just starting out, I believe you have to be dedicated to what you are trying to build and learn everything you can about your field. Sometimes this will require patience if things don’t go the way you planned. Being flexible will help so you don’t miss something you might not have even known you needed to do.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Chef Jennifer Jasinski has always had a powerful influence on my success. Watching her journey and success with her restaurants has been nothing short of inspiring. She has always been there for me to ask questions and get honest feedback from. Having her as a mentor, client and friend has been key to my success.
