Meet Melissa Scott

We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.

Melissa, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I stumbled upon my purpose as a youth. While babysitting kids, I would always find excitement and enjoyment in braiding their hair and cultivating their inner beauty outwardly.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My work as a Loc Solutionist and CEO is centered around promoting and maintaining healthy locs. Specializing in this area allows me to provide tailored care and expertise to clients and customers seeking to nurture their hair naturally. I’m most excited about having the opportunity to utilize my gifts to be a blessing to the world. In addition to my services, I’m also proud to have developed “Loc Em Up Products”, a line of handmade hair care products crafted with care and precision. Each product is formulated with the best ingredients, free from harmful chemicals, to nourish and protect locs from the inside out.
What sets me apart is my commitment to quality and holistic care. I prioritize the health and vitality of my clients’ locs above all else, using my expertise to promote long-term strength and resilience of hair.
I’ve remained strong in my commitment to providing superior products and services.
In an industry where harmful chemicals are unfortunately prevalent, educating consumers about the importance of using quality, natural ingredients has been an ongoing struggle. Many people aren’t aware of the potential damage these chemicals can cause to their hair and overall health, particularly with locs, which require special care and attention. I’ve worked tirelessly to educate and empower others, advocating for safer, healthier alternatives in hair care. By staying true to my values and prioritizing the well-being of my clients, I’ve been able to overcome many of these challenges and carve out a niche for myself in the industry.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1) Quality customer service is a crucial element for relationship building and brand development because you’re establishing a trust factor where the customers feel comfortable in knowing that you are reliable and that you truly care about their loc journey and hair health.
2) Being consistent and available – there are many stylists that work just to make ends meet, for money or high demand, but it’s important to set yourself apart by caring about your customer’s needs and offering solutions towards the struggles that they may be facing within their loc journey. Remember to stay encouraged and don’t give up no matter how hard it seems.
3) Marketing /promoting yourself is key. It takes a lot of marketing strategies that involve taking the time to prioritize spreading the word about your business. Cultivating relationships, networking, and breaking out of your comfort zone to put your brand in the face or your customers will create value to the solutions that you’re offering your target market.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

The Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs has been absolutely amazing with providing opportunities for networking, helping me to scale the business, and offering resources that have boosted my confidence while fostering my core values to help me excel in future endeavors in growing my “Loc Em Up Products” hair care line. In the future ahead, I am excited to continue my relationship as a Stakeholder within the company. Next, I am dedicated to growing my team and collaborating with other Loctitians, influencers and potential brand ambassadors to grow the movement while promoting healthy Locs and overall enhanced quality of life.
