We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melissa Tuvey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melissa below.
Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Definitely my parents, but mostly my mother. She is the hardest worker I know, and still works full time today! But, that’s always been within my DNA. I’m a worker bee that thrives on busy, the hustle and bustle and a full calendar.
Looking back, as the company turns 20 this month, I am incredibly proud of myself. In a two decade span, any entrepreneur will go through highs and lows, and ebbs and flows. Of course, life continues behind the scenes. I can concretely remember the events I produced experiencing life events like the birth of my children, my wedding, loss of loved ones and everything in between.
At the core, you really have to love what you do. And by loving what you do, you have to continue falling in love with it. On sunny days when you’d rather be at the beach, on rainy and sad days, and even days when you’d rather rest.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a full service wedding and event planning company based in San Diego, and travel! We design, plan, coordinate almost 100 events per year and just celebrated our twentieth year in business!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence, Perseverance and Creativity. I knew that because I initially entered the industry with marketing and PR experience, but not wedding experience, I knew certain things would have to happen. I quickly had to learn to respond the fastest, quickly learn everything I didn’t know and develop my creativity all at the same time. Throw in life, and learning how to be an entrepreneur has made for an incredibly challenging but fulfilling experience!
When I entered the market, we didn’t have the education available today. So, I would say learning as much as possible and exposing yourself to as many colleagues, vendors, venues and potential clients is key!
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Growing the team. For most small business owners, their business is their baby. As such, each person of the team is equally wonderful in their own right, but is a reflection of me and the business. I’m always looking for the right people to add. Do they compliment our existing team? What new skill sets do they have that might be lacking in our team? At the end of the day, I’m looking for people I trust implictly and that the relationship goes both ways.
