Meet Melissa Tyson

We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Tyson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Melissa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I have always been passionate about creating art. Since I was a small child I would go by construction sites and find the colorful wires and make them into rings to sell at the swimming pool. Later in life the minute my hands touched metal I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! And in that knowing finding God in this part of my journey solidified my purpose, a Bringer of Beauty. It fills my heart with so much love and joy to see my creations bringing joy to peoples hands and having a small part in marking milestone moments with handcrafted treasures of jewelry is fulfilling my purpose in being a jewelry designer!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a wife a mother of three amazing kids, and a goldsmith jewelry designer. I love creating joy for people’s hands, treasures to mark milestone moments in peoples lives, engagement, marriage, anniversaries, etc. I have been creating jewlery for 25 years and I still love it every single day! It’s the best of both worlds really, I love being a wife and and mom, and getting to live my passion for making jewelry. The most exciting things of late has been being invited to show in Paris Fashion Week in the fall and we just returned from Milan Fashion Week (this week). We take the kids with us to all these adventures, what more could I ask for than for them to experience me living my dream! I hope it inspires them and others to live their dreams as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I always wanted to learn artisan goldsmithing from as many people as possible. One of the beauties of Goldsmithing is that I could spend my whole life learning and never learn it all. This mentality and curiousity took me around the world to study. From my professors at ECU, to apprenticing with a Swordsmith, Lapidary Artists, a Blacksmith in Montana, and a famous Goldsmith Lisa Sotilis in Italy & Greece. Keep knocking on doors and staying curious and teachable, ask questions and seek out the masters and mentors, you never know where it will lead you!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love collaborating! It’s so fun and exciting. Being a part of the wedding world as I mainly created Custom Engagement Rings… I often get to collaborate with many styled shoots for weddings, magazine shoots/features. And recently collaborating with an incredible clothing designer for Fashion Week in Paris and Milan. And my dearest Mentor in Goldsmithing who is world famous just asked me to collaborate with her on a new collection. I love collaborating with jewelry it’s is like a divine weaving that connects so many amazing people together! And I love people and meeting new people in collaborations makes me feel so alive! Collaborating adds so much fun to this creative adventure of life!
