We recently connected with Melissa Wonder and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Melissa with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic stems from several factors. Firstly, it originates from my inner drive and desire to achieve goals. I’ve always believed in the importance of self-discipline and persistence in attaining success, so I devote maximum effort to completing tasks. Secondly, my work ethic is reinforced through continual self-improvement and the pursuit of excellence. I am constantly learning new things, developing my skills, and striving to be the best in my profession. One aspect is my ability to adapt and learn from challenges and learn from experience in the past.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been involved in makeup artistry for many years now. Since my teenage years, I have always wanted to stand out and be different from everyone else. I loved being the center of attention and would strive to create incredible looks in both clothing and makeup for every party I attended. I always knew that makeup was my calling because I had a natural talent for it. At that time, there was very little information about the fashion world in my country of origin, so I always had to come up with makeup looks on my own.
Later on, I fell in love with Fashion TV, and a dream began to form in my mind – to work at Fashion Week. Interestingly, this dream came true several years later when I won the Grand Prix in a competition hosted by the cosmetics company INGLOT as the best makeup artist in the country. This victory allowed me to work at Fashion Week in New York City.
I also had a small but very popular makeup school. The classes would be fully booked two years in advance. My style is all about revealing the inner world of my clients, highlighting their unique features, and emphasizing their individuality without hiding the real person behind layers of makeup. My clients should always feel comfortable with their makeup, which should not only be beautiful and long-lasting but also lightweight.
My journey has been incredibly challenging and rocky, filled with both victories and disappointments, but I am still in the profession, and I love my work.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have had the greatest impact on my career are diligence, willingness to face fear head-on and resolve issues quickly, and the ability to learn from the best.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My current goal is to find a good agency and work more on red carpets. I’ve also decided not to give up on my dream of an online makeup school, so I always invite new faces to my beauty photoshoots. I really enjoy working with people, and the energy my clients give me fuels my passion to continue my work.
