We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Yearwood recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self esteem comes from within! It has taken a long time for me to feel comfortable in confidence, and it’s something I’m still actively working on. I have a wonderful support system consisting of family and friends, and that helps tremendously.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a tattoo artist in Austin, Texas. I’ve been tattooing for about 3 years, and am self taught. I’ve loved tattoos since I was a young kid, and even took some inspiration from my parents having tattoos.
Tattooing has taught me so much, including the virtue of patience.
It means a lot to me to be able to create art for people, and help people love their bodies more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If you want to tattoo, one thing I think is important is understanding that it isn’t a skill that is quick and easy to pick up. You have to work hard, be consistent, and be open to constructive criticism. I also think having an extensive portfolio and art background is helpful. You don’t have to be the greatest artist who ever lived, but having a general understanding of contrast or colors, for example, will only help you in the long run.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be persistent!
How would you describe your ideal client?
A couple things that make someone an “ideal client” is open-mindedness and communication. I enjoy collaborating with people on their ideas! However, it’s also important for me to have trust with my clients. If you can’t trust me with the design process, that leads to unhappiness or disappointment with a tattoo (which we don’t want!).
An ideal client will at least listen and consider my professional opinion and suggestions. Through communication, anything is possible!
