We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melissa Young. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melissa below.
Melissa , thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
Communication is the key to most every aspect of life. Communicating effectively is something I’ve learned over the years through my experiences.
My ability to communicate really began while working for a Verizon Wireless call center straight out of college. There were so many great training classes on how to communicate with customers that really stuck with me. This helped me professionally and personally as I navigated life after college.
I learned to be an effective listener first. Listening helped me understand what was said and how I should take action or respond to it. I also learned to not speak over someone as they were speaking. Yes, I was the person finishing your sentences thinking I knew what you were going to say. I’m sure it was annoying trying to communicate with me at times. Over time, I learned that being an effective communicator would help me be successful and all areas of life so I really needed to master that in order to grow.
As a Fashion Stylist, I have to anticipate my clients needs and deliver great results for their projects. I’m constantly asking questions to understand project goals and capturing details by listening to my clients. Even when projects don’t go as smoothly as planned, I’m always trying to figure out what was missed in order to make things better moving forward. There’s a constant cycle of give and take but overall being willing to work and communicating as I know how has gotten me the best results. I’m so grateful for the path this far. I’m even more excited to see the growth that’s coming in the future!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a lifestyle and fashion wardrobe stylist specializing in advertising and commercials. I’ve worked in this business for close to 10 years.
Some of my clients include Kenya Moore of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. I’ve also styled advertising campaigns for brands like Woodhouse Spa, Crown Royal, African Pride and Crème of Nature. I’ve also done on-set wardrobe styling with Divorce Court (season 24) as well. Please follow my journey on all social media platforms: @melissajandco
I pride myself on my ability to execute visual story telling through wardrobe and finds the job as a stylist extremely rewarding.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back the three qualities that were most impactful on my journey would be resilience, grit, and ambition. The journey is hard. I could’ve given up but I knew that being resilient, having courage and staying ambitious would get much greater results. Here I am! I’m way better than when I started.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is any brand Ad agency specifically Mother in NYC. They’ve built a great brand while paying homage to the women who raised them and I admire that so much. I’ve always dreamed of styling ads for some of their top clients and I know that day will come soon. ♥️
