Meet Melody Delgado

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melody Delgado a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Melody, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Being the only one in the room who may look different can present its challenges, yet over time, I’ve discovered that the unique presence I bring is valuable and can significantly contribute to what I offer. I’ve learned to embrace my unique ideas, regardless of them being good or bad, and to use them to my advantage for innovative thinking and introducing fresh perspectives. Moreover, forging strong relationships has been crucial to my success. My close circle of connections has provided me with support and guidance that I believe would not have been as rich through experience alone. Finally, as part of maintaining a balanced self-care routine, it’s important for me to continuously seek and enhance my skills. Whether it’s enrolling in free courses at a community college or immersing myself in how-to videos, the world is constantly evolving, and it’s vital to advance your expertise and commit to lifelong learning.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Originally from Houston, TX, my husband and I relocated to California in 2018 and have embraced the change ever since. With a foundation in science and the medical field, and after earning my Master of Science degree in Psychology, I ventured into a new career path and have since found my niche in the entertainment and post-production industry for the last three years. During this time, I’ve also established my role as a co-creator and writer at RAD studios, collaborating with my husband. My passion for the arts, encompassing both performing and visual arts, has been a lifelong affair. Inspired by numerous iconic artists, I’ve honed my skills to craft a variety of graphic designs, illustrations, characters, and posters. My artwork is a fusion of animation and vivid storytelling, breathing life into figures such as various characters, action heroes, and abstract work.

My art is distinguished by meticulous detail and a distinctive blend of realism with animation, aiming to forge a bond between the piece and its beholder. The most thrilling aspect of my work is the opportunity to spread joy and inspiration. I relish the challenge of realizing someone’s vision for a character, illustration, or design, and bringing it to fruition. The creative journey is immensely rewarding for me.

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my web-comic series on Instagram, titled ‘Mello & Guapo,’ which is updated weekly with new episodes depicting the everyday escapades with my husband. Furthermore, with RAD studios, I am in the process of creating a new horror-comedy movie that merges 90s pop culture with fantastical elements, and in the processes of editing a new edition of The Ancient Chronicles: The Newborn, along with the upcoming sequel. Keep an eye out for more updates!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Reflecting on my journey, the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been creativity, attention to detail, and adaptability. The ability to generate unique ideas is essential when starting out. Although challenging, regular practice can help one explore various styles and techniques, pushing beyond one’s comfort zone. I have honed this skill by reading across different genres, watching a variety of movies and TV shows, and engaging in networking events. Moreover, meticulous attention to detail can transform work from good to exceptional. Mastering this skill has been a lengthy process, but studying and analyzing the intricacies in other artists’ work has been instrumental in enhancing my own. Lastly, adaptability has proven to be an invaluable skill. Despite numerous challenges and changes, it has enabled me to embrace my failures and insecurities and to persist. Echoing the sentiments of many other artists, it’s vital to acknowledge that the journey is just as important as the destination.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The most significant person in my life, who has been instrumental in helping me face challenges and has consistently encouraged my passion for the arts, is my loving and supportive husband. Regardless of the situation, he has been a pillar of comfort in difficult times and has bolstered my confidence to progress with any project I am involved in. Our journey began fifteen years ago, bonded by our mutual love for the arts, and throughout this time, we have enriched each other’s lives, honored our unique qualities, and supported one another in various endeavors. Our shared passion for the arts has taught us to appreciate every achievement, big or small, and to always be open to learning new things. My husband’s influence has instilled in me the virtues of being present, optimistic, and empathetic, fortifying my self-belief and determination to achieve my aspirations.
