Meet Melynda Bly

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melynda Bly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Melynda, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter syndrome was a talk someone at my first songwriting retreat 4 years spoke about. I learned the first day that you should never compare where you are in your journey. You should never compare your voice, abilities, or measure of success with other people. I learned in order to be a really great songwriter, you have to be willing to be vulnerable with your co writers. Sharing and talking about hard things brings greater songs, and great friendships. We all struggle with this one. I think we continue to grow, learn, and appreciate exactly who God made us to be. For such a time as this.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a singer songwriter, and I have been writing since I was a teenager.
It was four years ago this May I began co writing. Since then I have made up for lost time by absorbing as much as I can fit in. I currently have three songs released, and a vault of ones in the waiting. It’s not an easy industry. It’s very expensive, and competitive. I do this for God and believe he has anointed me for his work in me. I am currently learning production so I can grow, and also start releasing some simple, but beautiful love songs for Jesus that I have in the waiting. I lead Worship at church for over 11 years now. I pray my new music brings you love and peace.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Oh, that one is so hard because I have learned so much. I would say to collaborate in person and make connections with other music people. I have met and made friends with some really special people. Artists, Producers, Songwriters, Publishers and so much more that have helped shape me today. Go to songwriting retreats, and bootcamps.
You can teach yourself so much on the internet for free. I have taught my self guitar, finger picking, and piano. Perform in front of others as much as you can. You’ll get better and more comfortable every time. I study and read a lot. I am a photographer and love video making. I hope to make a sync placement with one of my songs for TV or film. Finances are a big part of this business. Invest in yourself and in time, you will start seeing results but it takes resilience.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes. I am always looking to grow and learn from others. I’m looking to release new music, and am currently looking to improve my vocals, and playing skills. I would love to songwrite with others. I also would love to do a duet with the right artist. I am hosting a Christian Songwriting Retreat in May of 2025 near the Seattle, WA area, and have room for a few more.
