Meet Meme

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meme a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Meme, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

This took some time for me to do. I’ve been bullied in school, called names and so forth, which led me to believe some of the things that were told to me. I was always self conscious about the way I looked because of that. I really didn’t start getting compliments about myself until i graduated from high school. That allowed me to view myself differently and pushed me to build myself up more around that. I learned about self care and self love and how important it is to take care of me no matter what was said to me. Over the last few years I really tapped into my spiritual side which gave me more insight on my wellbeing and my inner peace which I have grown to love so much. I feel that I am more in tune with myself and the decisions that I make now. Watching a lot of positive videos and meditation also helped me to achieve this. I still feel that I have more to learn but I am more confident about myself than I’ve ever been.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Though art is my first love, I used to write poetry all the time as a child as a way of expression. I loved the way I could write about something in different ways and playing around with words. A few years ago I wanted to bring back that passion I had for writing and used it with music. The first few songs I did, I received a lot of positive feedback from it and was encouraged to keep it going, so I did. I use it more to talk about real life situations and manifesting my life. I came up with the tag “baddii wit da fatty” as a humorous way to help build self confidence. With that in mind, I want to build a community behind it to promote women empowerment. I feel that women take on a lot of responsibility and we forget to take care of ourselves in the process, which leads to things such as body shaming. I feel that we should celebrate ourselves regardless of what society throws at us.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Critical thinking, finding ways to discipline myself, and working hard to achieve the goals that I had set for myself were some of the qualities I had that impacted my life. You have to take the time to think, plan and execute in order for anything to happen. Yes, it can and is hard to do at times but you definitely have to stay focus and make sacrifices. If I had any advice to give to my younger self or anyone, it would be to stay focused, keep going no matter how bad it looks in that moment, and get rid of anything that is not serving you. You have to get rid of that extra “noise” as I call it.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I’m not even going to lie..I cry it out! Lol! I have recently been hit with many hurdles where I feel like I am so stuck and don’t even know what to do or what’s going to happen. It’s the worst feeling in the world and I despise being stagnant. I also pray..A LOT. If I didn’t and give my worries to God I think I would be far gone past crazy lol. It also helps to keep the right people in your corner who want to see you succeed by all means necessary. I am beyond grateful for the ones in my corner because they have truly been there for me, seen me cry (and I hate for people to see me cry), and have just been beautiful blessings in my life. They could literally ask me for a kidney and I wouldn’t even hesitate to give it to them!
