Meet Mercedes Mitchell

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mercedes Mitchell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mercedes, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my ability to problem solve. I am a very resourceful person and that deprives from my creativity. I can always create something whether it is a better circumstance or project. All Things Interior was became what it is today from my resilience. When Covid happened, I got laid off of from an architecture firm, I did not like the feeling of my fate in other people’s hands so I promised to never feel that feeling again. Also, I had the circumstances of mothering a son with special needs so I needed a flexible working schedule so a lot of jobs were difficult to work in the corporate design world. It seemed no job was a fit. That weighed heavy on me but I decided to pour into All Things Interior. I gave myself a year to get this thing going and if it did not work out, I would get a “job” so I hit the ground running. The first three months were no projects but I kept marketing, going to events, reaching out to network, previous clients, and brokers. There were a lot of no’s but in month 4, projects started to roll in and in that same year I had 12 projects on my own. My resilience is what keeps my hope gleaming.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am the owner of All Things Interior which is a Design Firm based out of Maryland. I do not just decorate homes but I design them. I curate spaces that represent my clients and their stories. What makes my job special is that I get to use my gift to pour into other people’s lives. I get to hear stories and experiences that shape my client’s into who they are so I make sure to embody those things in their designs.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Professionalism. Passion. Tenacity.

Those three things are super important because professionalism is how you show up and people perceive you. In order to be in the proper rooms, you have to be able to navigate various social groups and people. Passion is what will keep you going when things are rough. Passion births your purpose so it is important to really LOVE what you do, unconditionally. Tenacity will allow you to garner vision. If you have these three things, your business will flourish.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

I have been honoring my needs and creating a better balance with work life. I set working hours and abide by them. I commit to my hobbies which allow me to decompress and not overwork myself.
