Meet Meredith Parks

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meredith Parks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Meredith, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I have been performing since I was very little so building the confidence to pursue a creative career started when I was young. I have always had a love for entertaining, for being on stage, or behind a camera. My passion for performance helped tremendously in allowing myself to take risks and chase my dreams. My parents have always been extremely encouraging and I am so grateful to them for providing a wonderful foundation of support and positivity. I don’t think that our journey in gaining confidence or raising our self-esteem ever ends. It’s something that I’m constantly working on and hoping to improve. My career path is a bit non-traditional, and I am frequently trying new things, creating new projects, and developing new skills. I am putting myself out there consistently and it can be scary and intimidating at times, but acting on my passions has always been very important to me. I know my relationship with my confidence and self-esteem will continue to grow and change throughout my career. It’s exciting to work toward any goal, and believing in yourself is one of the most important steps.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a singer-songwriter and actor from Gastonia, North Carolina. As a child, I loved performing and participated in all sorts of plays, choirs, and live performances. I quickly realized that being an artist was what I was meant to do!

After graduating with a BA in Dramatic Art and Communication Studies with a minor in Music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in acting and music. In addition to various independent films, I have appeared in television shows including Fox’s “The Resident,” Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” and The CW’s “Legacies.”

While in Los Angeles, I focused on honing my songwriting skills and performed primarily as a background singer. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2022 to continue my pursuits and also to be closer to my family in North Carolina.

In 2024, I re-energized my focus on my own music, and am excited to announce that my debut album, Trying to Find My Way, will be released on May 13th, 2025. The album blends a mix of genres, aiming to match the emotional ups and downs of my personal journey with a wide range of powerhouse vocals and intimate storytelling. I am so excited to share my music with the world. It is truly a dream come true!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities that continue to be imperative in my journey are tenacity, curiosity, and creativity. Moving across the country after college was very nerve-wracking, but also super exciting. Of course, many people have moved to Los Angeles to follow their dreams. I didn’t know exactly what that path would look like for me, but I am so glad that I believed in myself enough to move there when I did. I think it’s so important to be tenacious and determined. It’s true that you receive a lot of rejection along this career path, but keep going. I know I’m not the first or last to say it, but it is truly a marathon, not a sprint.

I have always been a curious person and I think that has really helped in allowing myself to feel excited along the way. I love watching films and tv shows, going to screenings, going to museums, listening to new artists, reading lyrics, I could go on and on. I love being immersed in art and am so inspired when I see or hear something new. I think a vital part of being an artist is being open to learn, asking questions and hearing new perspectives.

I think creativity is innately in all of us. Allowing myself to have my own creative projects and practices while auditioning or working on other things has been so helpful. There are so many tools out there to help foster creativity in ourselves. Take a pottery class, take pictures of nature, write poetry, cook a new meal, make a collage. You never know what small creative tasks can inspire in you!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I have a few different strategies that I turn to when I am feeling overwhelmed. Probably the most important is leaning into my community. I have a great support system of family and friends that I can lean on when I need them. On my own time, I love to journal. It’s such an important practice in my life, even if I don’t get to it every day. I find that getting my thoughts out of my head and onto paper is very helpful.

Exercise also helps! I love taking walks or getting outside when I am feeling frustrated or need a break from something that I’m working on. It’s funny how a simple change in your environment can help release tension and stress.

I am very blessed to have amazing collaborators on my creative projects. We have fostered a space where we can all discuss our ideas, thoughts, or concerns openly. That has been wonderful in allowing myself to feel excited and encouraged to share new ideas.
