Meet Merencia Henson

We recently connected with Merencia Henson and have shared our conversation below.

Merencia, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Throughout my career in mental health and social work in San Diego, I’ve often been the only minority in the room. This unique position has taught me valuable lessons in effectiveness and success. I’ve learned to embrace my unique perspective, advocating for diversity and inclusion to enrich discussions and decision-making. Building authentic relationships with colleagues has been key, fostering mutual respect and support. Continuous professional development has enhanced my skills and credibility, while resilience has helped me turn challenges into growth opportunities. By consistently delivering high-quality work and maintaining a client-centered approach, I’ve earned trust and recognition. Supporting and mentoring others who feel marginalized is also a priority, empowering the next generation of minority professionals. Being the only minority in the room has shaped me into a more effective and successful professional, committed to making meaningful contributions to my field and promoting greater diversity and inclusion.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My career as a mental health therapist and social worker spans over 20 years, during which I have gained extensive experience working with families, adults and community organizers in California and Washington, D.C. This deep commitment to mental health care inspired me to establish Mimi Care Connect, Consulting Group, where I now serve as CEO and specialized therapeutic consultant. As a therapeutic consultant, I leverage my extensive background to support and guide companies in strategizing and implementing mental health care solutions. My expertise is rooted in years of hands-on experience, providing me with a profound understanding of the critical need for mental health support in professional environments. I help companies by offering mental health care training, conducting workshops, and implementing wellness retreats.
Professionally, my focus is on creating sustainable mental health solutions that address the unique needs of each organization. I understand both professionally and personally how the lack of mental health support and policies in the workplace can lead to burnout, high turnover rates, and increased stress and anxiety. This awareness drives my passion for fostering healthier, more supportive work environments. In addition to my consulting work, I am a self-published author of self-help books and devotional journals.
This allows me to reach a broader audience, offering tools and insights for personal growth and mental wellness. My past professional career has equipped me with the expertise needed to drive meaningful change. As a specialized therapeutic consultant, I am dedicated to implementing innovative mental health care solutions that promote lasting well-being for both employees and the organizations they work for. Through Mimi Care Connect, I continue to pursue my passion for mental health, helping others navigate their challenges and achieve a balanced, fulfilling life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge as a specialized therapeutic consultant include an expertise in mental and Behavioral health, over 20 years of professional experience as a behavioral specialist, social worker and mental health therapist; and my deep understanding of the impacts of inadequate mental health support, which drives my advocacy for better workplace solutions. Additionally, I offer a holistic support approach through training, workshops, wellness retreats, and guidance for employees and the population they serve in the community. These strengths ensure that my work fosters healthier, more supportive environments for both individuals and organizations.
