Meet Mia Davis

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mia Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mia , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I’ve always believed I was one in a million. I often think back to that little girl who was fearless and spunky. I remember always wanting to be the leader during group projects. I enjoyed speaking up and letting my voice be heard. My confidence has grown tremendously as I’ve gotten older because I love that inner child within me.
Even through adversity and hardship, I stay focused on the beauty of my life. I wake up every day thankful for the woman I have become, especially considering there was a time in my life when I didn’t feel whole. I remind myself to always be my number-one cheerleader. Whenever I accomplish something or feel proud, I look in the mirror and remind myself how beautiful, strong, and brave I am. I never seek validation or love from others. The most important love to me is my own.
Growing up as a little chubby Black girl who didn’t care about what anyone thought, to going to middle school and feeling like I had to hide my true self, I’ve grown over the years to love the person I am both inside and out. I like to say I’m the queen of affirmation because I truly believe positive self-talk and self-encouragement are the best ways to live.
I strive to inspire others to do the same — to love the person they are now and the person they’re becoming, because they’re the only ones who can truly fill the void within them. I always say how honored I am to be me because through setbacks, hardship, and trauma, I have always overcome. My life is a testament to beauty, self-love, and manifesting the life of your dreams. That’s my mojo.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Mia Simone Davis, and I am the owner of Mia’s Kitchen and Healing Roots by Mia Simone. I am also a co-owner of Lipa Yoga Studio. At just 19 years old, I am a facilitator of a youth girls’ group, the vice president of the Black Student Leaders organization, and a board member of the La Crosse Soup Board, a community organization in my area. I’ve done a lot of philanthropic work as well.

I strive to empower and inspire others to create the life of their dreams. I love practicing self-care, whether through yoga, nature walks, cooking, or sharing my passion with the world. I like to call myself the “Affirmation Queen” because I love inspiring others to speak positively and highly of themselves. I remind everyone that they have imaginary pom-poms cheering them on every day.

I truly enjoy traveling, as it allows me to educate myself and enhance my knowledge through first-hand experiences. I am also currently attending culinary school, pursuing a degree in Culinary Operations. Every day, I love to say that I live limitlessly because I believe in trying new things and accomplishing my desires. I always tune back into the little girl inside me who has always had big dreams. I’m a kid at heart.

I enjoy the beauty of the world and love helping others. I find joy in connecting people, bringing them together, and creating beautiful, meaningful connections.

Throughout my life, I’ve always had the power to overcome obstacles, no matter the hardships or bumps in the road. I believe in turning pain into passion and creating the life I deserve.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I would honestly say that starting a student organization with a group of fellow students in middle school, creating a safe space for others, fundraising, and hosting events in 2020, while being deeply involved in my community, has been a pivotal part of my story. I believe this hands-on experience, with my boots on the ground, has been extremely impactful in shaping who I am today.

I also think that experiencing racism when I moved to a predominantly white town at the age of 11 played a significant role in my growth. Despite facing adversity, I continued to strive to be a good student and earn the approval of teachers, which greatly contributed to my personal development. There was a time when I was incredibly shy, scared, and afraid to truly be myself because I worried about how the world would perceive me.

Another major influence in my journey was being raised around strong, inspiring women. My entire life, I’ve been surrounded by beautiful teachers and women who have motivated me and fueled my fire to strive for the life I deserve

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was their constant presence and love. I’ve been fortunate enough to have both parents in my household for the majority of my life. Though they had different parenting styles, both taught me invaluable lessons that shaped me into the woman I am today. They taught me the importance of wisdom, knowledge, and hands-on experiences.

I grew up as a hard-working girl, and I’m still hard-working to this day because my parents never allowed my sister and me to sit idle. My mom worked hard, balancing parent-teacher conferences while also running a home daycare. I felt like I was the manager of all the children who came through our door. My dad took me to the grocery store every Sunday to buy ingredients and cook a meal for the family to enjoy when they woke up. My father also taught me the value of entrepreneurship by having me help at events for my brother’s food truck, where we’d encourage people to buy hot dogs at the Badger cheerleading events.

I am incredibly fortunate and blessed to have parents who were so active in my life. They showed me what it means to be positive, hardworking people who strive for greatness. Both my parents instilled in me the love of this world and for others. I am beyond grateful to have them as my guiding forces, constantly encouraging me and reminding me of the power within me.

They taught me to always believe in my beauty—inside and out. They were my cheerleaders, and the strength, knowledge, and wisdom they provided me gave me the resilience to become who I am today, despite the hardships and trauma I faced. I’ve watched them both overcome obstacles, yet they always made sure to show me the beautiful path I deserved.

I am fortunate to never have lacked anything in my lifetime. Even during times of struggle, I never felt it because the love I had from my parents was worth more than any material possession. I am beyond grateful for both Jermaine Davis and Shamawyah Curtis, who have been my biggest supporters and greatest role models.
