We were lucky to catch up with Mia Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I have felt a very close relationship to my purpose ever since I can remember. The feeling exists as an intrinsic deep knowing; something like the sound of the bodies heart beat itself. Knowing that I was sent here to spread healing and light through all that I do, to share myself in generosity and timelessness through sound.
I understand the gravity of such a purpose and as I grow, I begin to grasp the many avenues in which I can share my gifts. Whether it be composing music with specific intentions of love, cooking a nourishing meal for others, or just listening to those around me with an open heart – I feel in alignment with myself when I am able to show up in the world in such ways. Giving myself the space to be within purpose, while also uplifting those around me to share themselves in similar light always brings me joy as well! I feel that the more people are connected with themselves, the deeper they can understand their purpose – and that connection to self ripples out and extends itself as an echo into everything.
The way we connect with nature, animals, each other, and the entire earth are all a reflection of that internal knowing. I hope that through fulfilling my purpose of spreading love and light, I can help others do the same and facilitate any healing and expansion that I can in the process; allowing this path to exist as a fractal that reaches out to touch the entire sphere, tenderizing the hearts of all.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I primarily work with the medium of sound. I play guitar, piano, synthesizers, and anything that makes sound really haha. I am currently exploring three primary worlds – that of which consist of research based sound installations, composing for films, as well as producing and recording music for myself and other artists.
I am currently working on a documentary called “Women and The Wind” about female sailors who crossed the North Atlantic on a very loved and organic wooden sail boat. I am looking to expand my film composition world and begin deeply exploring a vastness of genres and topics – the process of scoring inspires me so much and I am honored to help other mediums come to life.
In my most recent works I have launched a sound installation series occurring in Paris, Amsterdam, New York, and Los Angels thus far. The series exists as a living organism that creates its own ecosystem wherever it occurs, nourishing the environment and its inhibitors deeply. Each installation is an improvised performance with 5-10 musicians, coming from vastly different backgrounds. The architecture of the spaces these performances occur in is very important, as the musicians fill the space in wide formations and levels. A huge circle where the audience walks between musicians, slightly different levels or playing on a staircase. I am breaking the mold of traditional concert experiences and offering a simultaneously new and ancient return to music in its rooted form. Creation of the moment, for the moment itself, coming from some ethereal place – allowing the listener to become part of the sound through these vastly different and refreshing architectural formations. I am very excited to continue the expansion of this series in 2024 and my dream is to one day take it to the Guggenheim- I have already begun planning the musical expression for such a space!
In terms of my long term musical expression – I deeply love writing songs and producing music! I started producing music at 16 and have been deeply infatuated ever since. I work with a very vast network of beloved artists, primarily in LA and will be releasing another duo EP by “OHMA”, a project co-created by Hailey Niswanger.
I am excited to share my solo artist project in 2024. The project exists as a flower blossoming in every direction – the music is an extension of my soul and I am honored to be able to share it with the world. It is entirely produced and written by me and will only feature a very small handful of 2-4 other musicians playing harp, woodwinds, and strings. It will be my first time releasing solo music, so I am thrilled to feel what its like to share this part of myself with the world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I feel like following joy is a very important part of life. Being connected to the way you feel and your most authentic self at the time can be such a beautiful compass to help bring guidance and honesty. Journaling, meditating, playing, singing, or being in nature are all things that help me access these spaces.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Mysticism of Sound and Music is one of my favorite books! Hazrat Inayat Khan is an prophetic Sufi legend with so many divine insights about the integral and historical role of both sound and music on the evolution of humans + the universe.
