Meet Mia Humphreys

We recently connected with Mia Humphreys and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?

I grew up in a musical family, so I’ve always loved playing the piano, singing, dancing, and writing music. I’ve also been interested in musical therapy. Since I’ve been working with individuals with special needs, I truly believe in the positive impact it can have. I’m currently working on my certification in Sound Healing, and it has been such an incredible journey. It combines my love for music, sound, and meditation. I attend Soundbaths and Yoga/meditation classes for my self-care, which have really helped center my thoughts and make me feel more balanced. I believe that these practices have helped me become more effective because I operate with more clarity and calmness throughout my busy schedule.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As the Administrative Director of both Behavioral Autism Therapies and Special Needz Coffee, I’m responsible for the administrative operations and compliance for both companies. It has been great to incorporate my love for music through our social skills programs. I have created programs that offerred singing, dancing, and performance opportunities for our consumers. We even have a fashion show at our annual Autism Acceptance Carnival. We’ve also recently added the Soundbaths to our social skills program, which both parents, clinicians, and our consumers have been able to participate in.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe that completing my Master’s in Business Administration was most impactful in my journey in becoming an entreprenuer. I learned the foundation of what was needed to create a successful business, as well as gained the tools and resources that I can always use when needed. Although I had several years of experience of working in corporate America, nothing really actually prepares you for the challenges that come with owning your own business. At the end of the day, you are the one responsible for everything. In order to achieve long term success, my advice is to have patience and perserverance, learn from your mistakes, and celebrate even small wins.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

I absolutely recommend the book, “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. It has taught me so much about not taking things too personally and understanding others’ perspectives won’t always be the same as yours. As a leader, you have to be able to communicate with others effectively, so that they can receive your message openly.
