Meet Mia Phoenix

We were lucky to catch up with Mia Phoenix recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I spent my 20s searching for who I was after growing up in a home that did not nurture my creativity or sense of individuality. My journey of finding my life purpose somehow led me to Hawaii, where I lived for 7 years. That’s where my soul was reborn.

Everything circled back around to my childhood dream. I always wanted to be an artist growing up. But my asian immigrant parents shut down that dream early on. I was told ‘money is the most important thing’ and ‘you will fail and be broke if you want to pursue art.’ After a semester of attending architecture school, I dropped out because I felt so lost. I was drawing straight lines on paper all day, when my soul was craving color and imagination. My dorm room began to feel like a prison, and it felt like wasting my 20s living in the box of someone else’s dreams.

So I dropped out and left home. I decided to listen to the voice of my inner child; my soul was calling me to step into the unknown. So I listened, and found myself working on an organic fruit farm in Oahu. I lived in a tent for a month, and got to paint my first mural there, during the last week of my stay. We got to eat directly from the land we tended to. Being barefoot in the soil everyday made me fall in love with the island. That was the first time in my life, I felt at home on this earth. I did not want to leave, so I booked a one-way to Maui. And that’s when my spiritual journey began.

The last 2 years I lived on Maui, I worked as a henna artist in a cute little shop right by the ocean. We got to watch the whales breach during wintertime. It felt like a dream. I got to draw on people for a living. I worked many jobs during my time in Maui, including working at a vegan cafe & attending massage school to become licensed therapist. In the end, I found my greatest joy (and highest-paying gig) was in being a full-time artist. That was the gift I opened my heart to receiving in Hawaii. I am forever grateful for the life-changing transformation I went through there.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

After the Lahaina fires happened last year, I took it as a sign it was time to leave Maui. I moved back to the mainland for the time being, landing in Houston, TX where my mother lives. I attended my first pop-up here and really got to work on building my brand within the local community, as well as online.

My Etsy shop for original paintings & art products is: MiaPhoenixArt. I love painting celestial & cosmic dreamscapes, which are inspired by visions I get in my meditations. I’ve been a devoted yogi of 13 years, so all the art I make is related to my own spiritual healing journey and my love for the supernatural beauty of Mother Nature. The overall theme of my artwork is Heaven On Earth, a crystalline rainbow paradigm that becomes a reality once we heal our heart. I hope to share my creative vision with those who are also on their path of self-awakening. I am grateful for anyone who resonates with my art.

My partner and I are originally from New Orleans, LA. We are working together to build our creative brand: Indigo Sol Tribe. I also make mermaid-inspired jewelry and wearable art pieces with freshwater pearls & crystals for our Etsy Shop: IndigoSolTribe. We are planning to make custom-designed apparel and sell original paintings together in New Orleans. My partner, Ahmad, has always encouraged me to pursue a creative path. He is also an artist, more specifically makes music, and our dream is to create art full-time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think alone time is crucial for us to hear our inner voice, as artists. A daily meditation practice, which I began in 2020, has been the biggest game changer for me. Also finding time to slow down & reconnect with nature. Spending time away from technology and the artificial world, tuning into the harmonic frequency of the Earth, helps us to deepen our relationship with God. That has been the single most valuable presence in my life. Every time I create art, it feels like I just need to move out my own way, to let something greater than me flow through the paintbrush onto canvas. Surrender and trust your own magic!

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The book that I’m currently reading, “The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity” by Julia Cameron has been super supportive & insightful on my creative journey. It provides powerful insight on rediscovering our inner artist and deepening our connection with The Most High Creator. I enjoy the useful writing prompts in the book and highly recommend to anyone on a creative path.
