Meet Mia Robertson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mia Robertson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up, I always saw my mother work hard, sometimes working multiple jobs to make it happen. She was always a manager or boss of some sort. I respected how people looked up to her and the integrity she had, doing even the smallest job. It definitely taught me, that if you want something, you work for it and be the best at whatever I decide to do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My accessories line and brand is called Namastay Gangsta. I create wearable art pieces, using gemstones and upcycled materials. Each item is truly one of a kind. My career in the beauty and fashion industry has helped tremendously with how I come up with designs and new ideas. I am inspired by all of the colors and textures around me. Namastaygangsta meaning duality, yin and yang or balance, was originally born out of necessity to find a way to quiet my mind, while grieving the loss of my mother, both grandmothers and grandfather all in a short time period. I found it healing to create beautiful things with my hands. I found that gemstones made me feel something that made me smile. The original items I created were inspired by my grandfather, and his love for gadgets. Also with a background in clinical herbalism I began to create essential oil blends that would help me get through the grief. I shared these blends with coworkers, who in turn, fell in love with what I was creating. Fast forward to today, I had a video go viral on Tiktok, while wearing a pair of my crystal/gemstone glasses and the rest was history. I fell in love with crystals and gemstones and the energy they held, during my healing journey. I decided to invest all that I had saved to purchase materials to begin creating so many amazing things. I truly believe in showing up as we see our higher selves and expressing our creativity through what we wear.
I am truly grateful for every experience and opportunity that this business has brought me and I can’t wait for what the future may be.
I hope to be able to continue to create items that spark joy. My brain is constantly going and I am continuously inspired by the need to create more sustainable accessories and things. I hope to bring new designs in a more conscious way that may help the planet in any way I can.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back I believe that my 10 plus years in the cosmetic retail industry has taught me a lot about business. It has also taught me how to connect with people and allows me to have empathy. Which in turn allows me to listen so that I may best serve the client. It has caused me to be more solution based and pivot when things aren’t going as planned. I truly appreciate every mentor or leader that has pored into me. My advice would be to pay attention and listen to those around you, that are in a position to help develop you. Be kind and genuine. Be open to ideas and ways to pivot when things aren’t going as planned. Take time out to breathe and regroup. And just keep swimming.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is the person who loves creative and positive, energetic things. I am a true maximalist at heart and so I create as such. Adding gemstones to each accessory just adds that high frequency vibe and allows for the client to feel the love put into each accessory.
