Meet Miana Coleman-Berry

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miana Coleman-Berry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Miana, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I developed my confidence and self-esteem through a process of teaching myself to love who I am over time. It came from learning to be comfortable in my own skin and embracing my true self. A turning point for me was in 2015 when I did the “big chop,” which is when a Black person cuts off their hair to remove damage and start fresh on their hair journey. That moment was powerful for me, it symbolized a reset, and it gave me the freedom to love myself more deeply. From then on, my confidence reached a new peak, and I’ve continued building on that self-love ever since.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a Black, plus-size, queer-owned business creating body-positive jewelry and handcrafted pieces that celebrate identity, self-expression, and empowerment.
My work features:
Thick body earrings with stretch marks,
Boobie + vagina polymer clay earrings,

Bracelets, resin creations, keychains, pins, and custom pieces.
Every item is handmade with intention, love, colorful, designed to uplift and honor the beauty of all bodies and identities. My business is at markets all over Seattle, I also do pop-ups at Seattle Fat Mall. In addition, I share new creations + custom options on my Instagram! @Mimiscretionshop

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three qualities that had the biggest impact on my journey were being crafty, taking a leap of faith, and continuing to learn. Being crafty has always allowed me to be resourceful and creative in my work. Taking a leap of faith was huge, I left my 9–5 job to become a full-time artist, and I’ve never looked back. It taught me the importance of trusting myself and moving forward even when things feel uncertain. Continuing to learn has been essential, no matter how much you think you know, there’s always a new skill, technique, or fun way of doing things to explore.
For folks who are just starting out, my advice would be: trust your creativity, don’t be afraid to take risks for what you love, and always stay open to learning and growing. That combination can really carry you far.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I was raised by my mom, along with an amazing village of people. The most impactful thing my mom did for me was giving me the freedom to be independent, creative, and true to myself, while also encouraging me to pursue higher education. She always allowed me to follow my heart and explore my creativity, as long as I committed to finishing college. Because of her support and that village , I graduated in four and a half years with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a Concentration in Ceramics and a Minor in Art History. That balance of freedom and guidance shaped who I am today.
