We were lucky to catch up with Micafoto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Micafoto, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose evolved over time. Initially, I pursued a career in the entertainment industry in Japan, working as a manager for TV personalities. It was a fulfilling experience but when I moved to Los Angeles, I faced challenges that led me to explore new paths. That’s when I discovered photography! I was captivated by the ability of photography to capture and preserve a moment in time forever. This allowed me to express my creativity in a way that resonated deeply with me. Through this journey, I found my purpose in telling stories through images, blending my background in Japan and my experience in entertainment with my passion for photography.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My work spans a wide range of settings and projects. I primarily shoot for Japanese magazines but my work also includes fashion brand catalogs, red carpet events, actor headshots, weddings and various other events. Additionally, I sometimes work on commercial and music video shoots, expanding my creative expression into different forms of visual media.
Recently, I created a photo essay book which allowed me to explore new dimensions of storytelling through photography. My focus remains on capturing the essence of each moment. Whether it’s a candid shot at an event or a carefully composed image for a fashion campaign. I am always excited to take on new projects that challenge me creatively and allow me to further develop my craft.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Adaptability: When I first started photography, I began with black and white photos, then transitioned to slides, digital photography and eventually video. Embracing these various changes and challenges allowed me to continuously evolve and adapt to new technologies and styles. Being flexible and open to change has enabled me to explore new creative paths and grow as a photographer.
Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial for smooth shooting. It’s essential to understand and fulfill the client’s needs through clear communication. Additionally, building good rapport with models helps to make them feel relaxed, which leads to capturing better expressions.
Passion for Storytelling: Photography is more than just taking pictures; it’s about telling a story through images. My passion for storytelling has driven me to create meaningful and engaging work, capturing the essence of various moments in different settings.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to:
Embrace Change and Learn Continuously: Be open to new experiences and willing to learn from them. Adaptability is key in any field and continuously seeking new knowledge will help you grow.
Develop Strong Communication Skills: Communication skills are essential for success in any profession. Whether with clients, business partners, colleagues, team members, or customers, those who communicate smoothly can increase efficiency, build trust, and form stronger relationships. This leads to better results for both yourself and others.
Cultivate Your Passion: Find what excites you about your field and let that passion drive your creativity. A strong connection to your work will keep you motivated and help you produce your best work.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was not to discourage me when I told them I was moving to Los Angeles. Instead of saying “don’t do it” or “it’s impossible,” they supported my decision and trusted that any challenges I faced would become valuable learning experiences. Their willingness to let me take risks, along with their continued support and encouragement from afar, has been profoundly influential in my journey.
