We recently connected with Micah and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Micah , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I often describe myself as a hybrid—a Belizean-American raised between Chicago and Belize, fluent in multiple languages, and shaped by two very different cultures. For much of my life, that came with challenges. In the U.S., I wasn’t always seen as Black enough or Latin enough, and in Belize, there were times I wasn’t considered fully Belizean. That feeling of being caught in-between could have been limiting, but instead, it became my strength.
My hybrid identity sharpened my ability to adapt, problem-solve, and see the world through multiple lenses. It has influenced the way I create music—the sounds I blend reflect multicultural spaces—and the imagery and storytelling that shape my brand and persona. What once felt like a struggle to “fit in” now fuels my creativity and gives me the ability to resonate with people from all walks of life.
Being “the only one in the room” no longer feels like a disadvantage—it feels like a privilege. I represent multiple worlds, and my ability to merge them allows me to build authentic connections, spark conversations, and create art that feels both unique and universal.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Music has always been a central part of who I am, but over the last few years, I’ve taken a step back to reimagine my role in the industry. I didn’t just want to be an artist — I wanted to be in control of my art. That’s what inspired me to start my own label and publishing company. Having ownership of my master’s and the ability to make executive decisions about my work has been one of the most empowering parts of my journey so far.
What excites me most is stepping into this next chapter as both an artist and a CEO. I’m not only creating music, I’m making the business decisions that shape where it goes and how it lives in the world. One of the most rewarding milestones was getting my music placed in reality TV shows like Baddies on the Zeus Network. To see my sound aligned with stories and visuals that connect with so many people — and to know I did that as an independent artist, with my own label and publishing behind me — was a full-circle moment.
Right now, I’m focused on releasing new music that reflects both my technical training and my growth as a business owner. It’s about finding that balance between creativity and strategy, and building something that lasts. For me, it’s not just about dropping songs — it’s about creating a legacy of ownership, independence, and art that feels true to who I am.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have had the most significant impact on my journey: persistence, business acumen, and strategic thinking.
Persistence has always kept me moving forward, even when the industry is slow or unpredictable.
Business acumen has been a game-changer. Understanding contracts, knowing what’s being offered, and not being afraid to redline or request amendments has allowed me to protect my work and make smart decisions. I’ve learned to take my time when negotiating, exercise as many options as possible, and always remember that a deal isn’t truly a deal without a formal offer and acceptance. Equally important is recognizing your worth and having the confidence to ask for it — it’s a critical part of sustaining and growing your business.
Strategic thinking and diversified income have also been key. I ensure that I have other revenue streams outside of music, so that if the industry slows down, I have stability. This approach not only protects my livelihood but also gives me the freedom to make decisions that serve my long-term vision.
Most importantly, ownership has been at the heart of everything I do. Owning my master’s, publishing, and the rights to my work has given me creative freedom, control over my career, and the ability to fully benefit from the success of my music. It’s what allows me to make empowered decisions and build a sustainable business that truly reflects my vision.
My advice to anyone starting out: learn the business as much as you learn your craft, prioritize ownership, don’t rush contracts, know your worth, and diversify your income. Combining persistence with knowledge, strategy, and ownership is what sets the foundation for both creative and professional success.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely — I’m always looking to connect with pioneers, visionaries, and innovators where we can come together to create something new, original, and unique that will impact culture. Right now, I’m especially excited about collaborating with fellow members of the Recording Academy, as well as working directly with the Academy itself through advocacy and initiatives that support artists.
I’m also open to joint ventures through my company and with other businesses — whether it’s endorsements, sponsorships, partnerships, or creative projects — not only as a business owner but also as a brand and talent. I’m drawn to collaborators who value creativity, ownership, and innovation, and who are interested in building something meaningful together.
If you’re reading this and feel we could create something together, the best way to connect is through my professional email at ( [email protected] ) or via my website and social channels. I welcome conversations that lead to long-term partnerships, impactful projects, and opportunities that elevate everyone involved.
