We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Micah Trigg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Micah , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
This is an amazing question. I think the first thing is perspective. Instead of pointing out that I look different and I’m the only person of my size and color, I always walk into a room adding value. Knowing that I have value to add boosts my confidence. I also know that it is important to have representation, so maybe being the only person is okay because, hopefully, I will open the doors for other people who look like me to feel more comfortable in spaces where they’re not seen. It helps people understand that it’s okay to be around those who might not look like them. Representation matters.
I could attest to this because everywhere I go, due to my size and my looks, I am constantly being stared at. One particular time, I walked into a room and everyone was staring. Of course, you automatically think something negative, like, “What are they looking at? Why are they staring?” Then, all of a sudden, a young lady came up to me and told me how beautiful she thought I was. So just because someone is staring at you and you’re the only one that looks the way you do, it doesn’t always mean that people have a negative perception of you.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Right now, I am on a marketing and promotion tour across the country on weekends. During the week, I assist seniors with Medicare and final expenses.
I’m also a plus-size model and have been modeling since 2016. One of my big goals is to move to Los Angeles to expand my modeling career.
I love traveling all over the world. I just got back from Bali, and I’m going to Thailand in August. My message is for people to know that whatever they truly desire in their heart, they can make it a reality. Your habits must align with your goals.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I always had a strong belief that I could succeed, even when I didn’t know exactly what to do. I have faith in myself to keep going, even when things don’t go my way. I will always try again and never give up. Determination is something I’ve always had. I always say, “Because of the MMA focus, keep your eye on what you’re trying to do, and things will happen.
Mistakes will happen, but I learn from them and move on. I don’t let them bring me down. Mindset is everything.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The first thing I do is take a breath and relax. Sometimes, you just need to give yourself a minute. Then, I write down everything that is overwhelming me and, one by one, check the box to find a solution to the problem. This minimizes my stress and feeling of being overwhelmed.
