Hi Michael , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My name is Michael Hatfield, and I was born and raised in a four-person household in Newcastle, Washington. My resilience was shaped through various experiences—learning from dedicated sports coaches, pushing my limits beyond school hours, and embracing the unpredictable path of life.

With a naturally curious mind and a drive for new opportunities, I found my resilience by stepping outside my comfort zone. One of the biggest leaps I took was leaving Washington, the only place I had ever known, to attend Missouri State University. This transition was more than just a geographical change; it was an opportunity for personal and professional growth. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for filmmaking and built confidence in my ability to bring creative visions to life.

At 19 years old, while studying at Missouri State, I met Louis Chaix, who would become both a close friend and a source of inspiration. I had the opportunity to pitch a short film to a movie producer, showcasing Louis’s vision of rollerblading across America. This moment marked the beginning of something much bigger. I was soon named the Director of Photography for A Journey of Purpose, a 90-minute documentary following Louis’s journey across the country to raise awareness for SJS/TEN.

Through this experience, I learned invaluable lessons about resilience—not just from the grueling production process but also from witnessing Louis’s relentless determination. His journey pushed me to develop greater mental and physical endurance, deepen my sense of camaraderie, and sharpen my storytelling skills. Watching him train and ultimately accomplish his goal reinforced my belief that limitations exist only if we accept them.

This chapter of my life solidified my understanding of resilience. It’s about knowing your worth, embracing challenges, and continuing to push the boundaries of what seems impossible.

My name is Michael Hatfield, and I am the owner of Hatfield Media Productions, a video production agency based in Bellingham, WA. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share more about my business because this is what I live and breathe.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1: Failure

Failure has been one of my greatest teachers, shaping my character and pushing me to grow. As a business owner, I’ve learned that success doesn’t come without setbacks. You can’t become the best at what you do without failing, learning from mistakes, and adapting. From sports to business to personal life, every failure has taught me something valuable—about myself, my goals, my character, and most importantly, how to better care for the people I love.

2: Faith

I found faith at 18, and growing up without a strong family foundation in faith made that journey more challenging. Through my learning and devotion to Christianity, I’ve come to realize my deep love for the Lord and the incredible ways He is working in my life. I am beyond grateful for everything I have experienced, as it has shaped me into the man I am becoming. However, it all starts with Him—the One who protects me, pushes me, and fills my life with joy.

3: Resilience

Resilience has been a cornerstone of my journey, especially as a business owner. From long nights and failures to the highs of success, resilience has kept me focused and reminded me why I do what I do—to tell untold stories and pursue my passion for filmmaking. More importantly, through my battles with mental health, resilience has pushed me beyond what I once thought was possible. Every day, I see growth, and that strength continues to translate into all aspects of my life.
