Meet Michael James

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael below.

Hi Michael , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Finding my purpose didn’t happen overnight—it’s been a journey, a real process of discovery. I grew up in Memphis, starting out as a rap artist, and that gave me a way to express myself and connect with people. But when I transitioned into acting, that’s when I knew I’d found something deeper. Acting let me tap into parts of myself I hadn’t explored before and gave me a way to tell stories that mean something.

My purpose really came into focus as I began representing voices like mine—the ex-cons, the people who’ve been through the struggle, the ones looking for a second chance. I realized this was more than just acting; it’s about showing people they’re not alone, that they can overcome whatever life throws at them. My purpose is in telling those stories honestly, with all the grit and hope they deserve, and giving people a reason to believe in change.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My story is one of resilience, transformation, and relentless passion. Born and raised in Memphis, in the early days I found myself channeling my energy through music as a rap artist, a path that taught me how to connect with an audience and share my voice. But it wasn’t until two years ago, after stepping into the world of acting, that I discovered my true calling. Since then, I emerged as a compelling force in the indie film scene, particularly on platforms like Tubi, where I starred in leading and supporting roles across a dozen films.

“I represent for ex-cons, for hustlers, for the people who think there’s no way out,” he says, reflecting on the real-life struggles he’s seen and experienced. It’s that raw, relatable energy that makes Michael a unique voice in the industry—a voice that tells the stories of the voiceless and finds strength in vulnerability.

My approach to acting is grounded in hard work and faith. I’m grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and the people who have supported me, but I’m clear that every role is earned through preparation and prayer. My confidence comes not from others’ opinions but trusting in myself and my unwavering belief in God’s plan. “God doesn’t play about me!” he says, embodying the strength that fuels his every performance.

Professionally, Michael’s schedule is packed. From filming the much-anticipated “Sinful Lies” and preparing for its November premiere to his latest role in “Poly Love in Peach City,” now available on Tubi, he’s continually challenging himself with diverse characters and complex stories. His past work includes everything from gritty drama to heart-pounding thrillers, and each project has only sharpened his focus. Recently, he wrapped filming on the drama “Deadly Control,” a powerful exploration of love and domestic abuse, written and directed by Mya Speller.

As I continue my journey, im driven not only by my own ambitions but by the responsibility to represent those striving for change. My career is proof that second chances are possible with faith, effort, and a belief in something bigger than oneself. Im not just acting for the camera—but acting for everyone who’s ever faced doubt, who’s ever needed a reason to believe.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey so far, three things come to mind that have really shaped my path: resilience, self-discipline, and my faith. First, resilience. I came into acting from a completely different world, with no guarantees, but my mindset has always been to keep moving forward, no matter what. I think the willingness to get back up after every setback is what keeps you in the game long enough to see the results. Second, self-discipline. When I started, I didn’t have the formal training that a lot of actors did. But I invested my time into learning, studying performances, and preparing as best I could. And to this day, I stick to routines that keep me sharp and ready for any role that comes my way. Lastly, my faith in God has been my foundation. I believe that everything that’s happened has been part of a bigger plan, and that’s what keeps me grounded.

For those coming up, my advice is to know your ‘why.’ Understand why you want to be in this industry because that’s what’s going to keep you focused when things get tough. Don’t rely on handouts or shortcuts; put in the work, invest in yourself, and be patient. Finally, surround yourself with people who genuinely support you and who challenge you to grow. This industry can be tough, but with the right mindset and a solid support system, you can achieve things you never thought possible. Stay hungry, stay humble, and keep faith in the process.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Right now, my biggest challenge is balance—balancing the grind with everything else in life. Between filming, promoting projects, and planning for what’s next, it can get hard to keep things steady. But I know I’m here for a purpose, and this work is what I’m supposed to be doing. So, I’m figuring it out by staying grounded in my faith, setting boundaries, and reminding myself of what matters most. I make sure to pray, keep my focus on God, and take things day by day. It’s about not letting the pressure pull me in too many directions, staying present, and remembering why I’m here in the first place. Every day’s a lesson, and I’m just working to grow stronger through it all.
