We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael “Lil Joe” Waldron a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michael “Lil Joe”, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
What a great question! My Mom definitely influenced me big time on my work ethic. She was an Entrepreneur for most of my life growing up & was constantly working towards what she wanted. When things would happen or challenges would arise, she always found a way to overcome or reinvent herself.
I would also say my work ethic is in part to one of my biggest fears and this is failure. Failing myself, my family, my kids. It’s not something I ever want to be in a position to do, so I work very hard to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m entering my 26th year as a Professional DJ & man has it been a wild ride! I’m also incredibly grateful to say I just kicked off my 11th season as the DJ for the Denver Broncos & Bud Light VIP Tailgate Parties.
I have worked with several companies over the years, but I have branched out on my own in the last 2 & 1/2 years. I’m really happy with the direction my business is going, I am involved with an amazing network of other DJs and business owners that we all bounce ideas off each other or help & mentor each other without egos getting in the way.
Professionaly, I am focused on creating amazing relationships with those that I work with. I get a lot of client, vendor & venue referrals. So I want to give everything I have to every event that I do, because in most cases, it is not just my name on the line, it is someone else who referred me. So I am held to a higher standard. That in itself is a huge driving force for me.
What is the most exciting or special thing about what I do? My slogan is “Let’s Create Memories” and it couldn’t be more true. I get it take people on a musical journey with highs, lows, fist pumping, singing along and more. I get the privilege of helping people forget whatever is going on in their lives and just be in the moment, be happy, let loose and just be entertained. It truly is an intense feeling from my perspective, like a natural high.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
From a DJ perspective:
1. Knowing music & genres (this is a constant process). Also finding new music or mixes.
2. Being confident on the microphone as an MC. (I do workshops with DJs on this)
3. Being able to read a crowd & knowing when & how to make adjustments on music.
From a Professional standpoint:
1. Always be open to learning new things. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room, couldn’t be more true.
2. Be willing to adapt or start a new chapter with a new direction.
3. Don’t ge complacent. If you feel like you are getting a rut, pull yourself out, get focused & energized.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone that wants an amazing event. Whether they have a vision or I can help them create a vision. I can bring my expertise to the table, helping & guiding the client throughout the process.
