We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael Sponsel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael below.
Michael, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Through family and friends. There are several times that I have felt that I was not good enough or that I was not able to make the right decision. I have leaned on my family and friends for reminders that I am good enough. Through their love and guidance, I have found great confidence and self-esteem in my personal and professional life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own Freedom Barber Co. Atlanta’s neighborhood barbershop.
What is most special about Freedom Barber Co is that we are Atlanta’s true neighborhood barbershop. We value, build, and grow personal and professional relationships with our neighbors. This makes getting a haircut with us more of a friendly hang out with friends vs. a chore.
With our appointment system, we focus on valuing our neighbors time and livelihood.
At Freedom Barber Co., we put a modern twist on an old school artistry.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Confidence in our brand. I have always believed that we a barbershop that is doing it “The right way”. We are constantly evolving based on our clients needs and wants. We have always been able to strengthen the brand vs changing it.
2. Willingness to learn. No one knows it all and no person is an island. To be successful, we have to be able to ask for, and accept, help. There are resources to help you out. Mistakes in business are always costly. Do all the proper research to have a mentor that can guide you through the process and help you through the hard times.
3. “Bend, Don’t Break” There will be hard times, there will be times that you feel like packing it all up. Realize that you will be pushed to your limits with your business. It will always be on your mind and it will never be perfect. Always remember during the hard times to not break your spirit or why you are doing what you are doing.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Our number one obstacle will always be hiring quality staff members. We always hire based on personality and are willing to teach the skill if needed.
When hiring the correct people, be willing to teach the potential candidate skills to succeed if their personality meets your brands values. As a small business, we don’t always have the money to invest in our new staff members but we can always invest our time. The return for your time will be both getting time back and watching your finances grow.
