We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Underwood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.
I developed my decision-making skills by watching others in the space & what they struggled with. Also thinking about What’s the worst-case scenario look like. When you send in inventory it’s possible that it won’t be available for purchase for 4-6 weeks or could get completely lost. My biggest shipment so far was 7.5K thankfully it arrived safe, but I’ve seen others lose 40k. Also, what you sell & returns. I’ve seen pool cleaners/Hunting supplies/TV/computers get retuned lost in transit & fraud & people be out thousands. Theres a lot of software’s & outsourcing you can do but i like to do most of the work myself. I’ve seen people end up with subscriptions/VA’s/Employees/Warehouse Etc. but if a recall lawsuit etc. messes up your payout are you able to survive 3-12 months while things get sorted out. Those are just a few examples of what I’ve seen others go through & what’s shaped how I think during the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Right now, I’m Focused on day to day selling & helping Others learn how to sell on Amazon. I have 2 Friends that are 7 figure sellers that created a space where others connect i answer question, we get product leads & there are dozens of others to bounce ideas off of. we’re actively working to make the space provide more value. I’ve been experimenting with custom packaging & business models like wholesale private label etc. I Enjoy teaching people how to sell because it’s easy to pick up & there’s a lot of bad/outdated advice in the space so i feel giving correct actionable advice is important. I’ve seen a lot of bad advice even from news outlets telling people they can dropship as a side hustle which is against current TOS & will have you shut down be you get started. Also, random things like what supplies/software’s to use. Are you factoring in all cost Theres fees with using the Amazon warehouse system. How fast are you selling through inventory because there’s inbound placement fees storage fees long term storage fees. I’ve been able to help Thousands of people whether big or small on their journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three useful things i think are most impactful for people to know are. First Find someone in the space you can trust & you have to do the work yourself. Amazon sued 7 people last year because they were offering some form of done for you service & anyone associated with those accounts lost there’s. Also, just because someone can sell you a pallet of something doesn’t make them a Authorized distributor of it so if Amazon or the brand makes a fuss you need to have the correct Answers.
Second once you do your homework & source a product you might not want to go deep on it. On paper everything can look correct but if you start to get returns missing parts Etc. a sure thing can turn into thousands tied up. Things that can lead to headaches are battery products pesticides & the FDA could come out with something, or Amazon just decides to ban it.
lastly i like to try & caution people about growth & money management, can you cover all your cost for 3-12 months worst case. I’ve seen people take out bad funding options & the repayments kill them. Also, I’ve seen people with employees & they let them list something on the account change something etc. if that person doesn’t 200% know what they’re doing it can lead to your shut down when the system detects the problem.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking to work with brands whether it be selling their products on my store or helping them manage & understand there’s. can help companies with unauthorized sellers & the actions they can take to product the. brand, i’m also looking to work with Anyone interested in a side hustle i think Amazon is the best opportunity because you can send your products in & while you work have kids sports you can run your store from your phone. I try to show anyone the opportunity because you don’t need a 2nd job or more hours to make a difference,
