Meet Michael Zamora

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Zamora. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Michael, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Well, this is an interesting question because I think it’s different for everyone honestly. For me personally, there were lots of moments where I didn’t feel like I was confident but when looking back on the moment, I was actually acting very confidently despite not have much of a plan in place. I think my confidence as a person developed out of being thrown into multiple situations throughout my life where the only option to get myself out of the situation, was to move forward even without a plan necessarily all laid out. Life takes continuously unexpected turns and I think at its core, that’s what confidence is: moving forward even without a clear plan.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a musician, fronting the band Posival since I was 18. I have my degree in History from UNT here in Denton, and I work as a maintenance tech fixing primarily Air Conditioners and Heaters throughout the year, but also pretty much anything else that needs to be fixed. Music is my passion, and takes up more time than I would consider a hobby is supposed to take up, but we have gotten to do a lot of cool things despite the fragmented condition of society at the moment. We released our 4th album a few months ago now, and are in the process of preparing for a tour and live session that we hope to release sometime next year while we continue working on our 5th album.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most important quality I’ve had throughout all aspects of life, is being communicative and respectful. It doesn’t take much, but I’ve found that it goes a long way with the right people. The wrong people hate it when you’re communicative and respectful because they try at every turn to stifle your progress or create other maneuvers to cause trouble, but those are people you’d probably want to stay away from anyway. The last quality for me is just persistence without expectation. I just try hard at what I do to be the best I can be, and gave up the material or shallow enjoyment of having attention for whatever it is that I’m doing a long time ago. It would be better to be able to keep doing what I’m doing for a longer period of time, than to have to stop or slow down because of all the attention surrounding it.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My dad has been the most helpful for me in overcoming challenges. To say the least, my dad has had a series of very unexpected turns in his life, but he always stays positive, which is something that for whatever reason has proven more difficult for me and my analytical brain. My dad looks at things on a micro level, whereas I tend to look at things on a macro level. This creates an interesting balance in our relationship I think. Our personalities compliment each other, despite being at odds with each other from time to time. He always encouraged me to be disciplined, which is something I know he struggles with from time to time, and I think it’s made me a very efficient person.. I’m very thankful for him.
