Meet Michele Defilippo

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michele Defilippo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Michele, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Growing up in an Italian family in Brooklyn, NY, I learned resilience from a young age. In the 1950s, it was acceptable to undermine a child’s confidence. Put-downs like “Get over yourself,” “Don’t get a big head,” and “Sit down and shut up” were common. It may sound strange now, but there was a rivalry between the Irish and Italians then. Since I attended a primarily Irish Catholic school, I was told outright that I couldn’t take part in schoolyard games, join the Girl Scouts, or fit in. Thankfully, these experiences only made me more determined to resist.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

1106 Design, my company, offers editorial and design services and publishing project management to independent authors who want traditional publisher quality. We follow the original self-publishing model, in which the author is the publisher, allowing them to retain complete control of their books and maximize their revenue from book sales.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Learning a craft, being willing to work hard, and perseverance have served me best. These three principles have helped me through many of life’s challenges. The best business advice I ever received (in 1980) was offered by a customer who said, “Listen to your customers; they’ll tell you everything you need to know.” He was right, and I remember his name to this day.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

A lot of publishing advice found on the internet is targeted towards amateurs rather than professionals who have written a substantial and important manuscript. Our ideal client is an author who aims to publish a high-quality book and acknowledges the need for experts to accomplish this.
