We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelin Dowell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelin , thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
I developed my decision-making skills through a combination of experience and reflection. As a business owner and leader in homecare, I face decisions every day that directly impact both the well-being of clients and the success of my team. These experiences taught me the importance of balancing logic with empathy — gathering the right information, weighing options carefully, and trusting my instincts while remaining open to feedback. Reflection is a key part of my process, too — looking back at what worked, what didn’t, and how I can improve. Over time, this approach has helped me make confident, thoughtful, and compassionate decisions that positively impact the people I serve.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey into homecare started with a simple but powerful belief: that everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and cared for in the comfort of their own home. After working in the healthcare field for several years and seeing firsthand the challenges families faced when trying to care for loved ones, I felt called to create a service that combined professionalism with genuine compassion. That calling became Magnolias and Memories Homecare.
I am the Founder and Owner of Magnolias and Memories Homecare, a non-medical homecare agency based in Atlanta, Georgia. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to provide compassionate, dignified, and personalized care that allows individuals to live safely and comfortably in their own homes. What excites me most about this work is the opportunity to create real impact — helping clients and families feel supported during some of their most vulnerable times.
What makes Magnolias and Memories Homecare unique is our focus on building meaningful relationships. We don’t just provide care — we create trust, comfort, and peace of mind for both clients and their loved ones. I believe in treating every client like family, and that’s a value my entire team embodies.
Right now, I’m especially focused on expanding our services to include post-rehab transition care and partnering with local facilities to ensure smoother, safer discharges for patients returning home. We are also proud to serve veterans through the VA Community Care Network, honoring those who have served by providing the respect, dignity, and support they deserve.
Looking ahead, my vision is to continue growing Magnolias and Memories Homecare into one of Atlanta’s most trusted names in private homecare, while staying true to our mission of compassionate, individualized service.
I also want to take a moment to recognize the caregivers and nurses , who are truly the heartbeat of this industry. Every day, they give their time, compassion, and energy to nurture and support clients who depend on them. Their hard work and dedication make all the difference, and I deeply value that.
As a business owner, one of my greatest goals is not only to provide exceptional care for clients but also to create meaningful opportunities for caregivers. I want to offer a workplace where they feel supported, appreciated, and proud of the work they do. When employees love what they do and feel valued, it shows in the care they provide — and that is the culture I am committed to fostering within my company.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that shaped my journey in the healthcare industry are resilience, empathy, and strategic decision-making. Resilience helped me push through challenges, empathy guided how I connect with both clients and caregivers, and decision-making allowed me to grow with confidence.
My advice for those starting out: treat challenges as lessons, listen deeply to others, and practice making thoughtful choices. These small, consistent steps build the foundation for long-term success.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First and foremost, I give all glory to the Lord above. My faith has been my foundation in every season — guiding me through challenges, strengthening me when I felt weak, and reminding me that every step in this journey has a greater purpose. Prayer and trust in God have shaped not only my character, but also the way I lead and serve others.
I truly believe it’s God who has equipped me with the resilience, wisdom, and grace I needed to grow and succeed.
