Meet Michell Barker

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michell Barker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Michell, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

Writer’s block almost kept my story from being told—but I overcame it in three key ways:

1. I got honest about the truth I was trying to communicate.
Once I stopped overthinking and focused on the core principles I wanted to share, the writing started to flow. Truth has a way of unlocking clarity.

2. I wrote through the fear.
I had to confront the anxiety that came with writing—fear of judgment, fear of failure, fear of not being “enough.” I scheduled time, stuck to it, and wrote scared if I had to. Fear has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise. I chose the second. Truthfully, the fear didn’t fade until I was halfway through the book. But I kept showing up.

3. I identified my writing flow.
Everyone has a peak creative window. Mine was late at night—around 9 or 10 PM. That’s when the ideas flowed, so that’s when I wrote. I honored that rhythm and stayed consistent.

And one more thing—I didn’t tell anyone I was writing. No opinions. No pressure. Just me, the page, and my purpose.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As an author, public speaker, life coach, and entrepreneur, I wear multiple hats—but they all serve one mission: to empower growth, drive transformation, and create systems that support personal and professional evolution.

My work as an author allows me to put deep truths into words—insights born from lived experience, hard-earned lessons, and a relentless drive to see others succeed. I don’t just write to inspire; I write to activate. Every page is a call to action, a challenge to break limiting beliefs, and a roadmap to unlock potential.

On the stage, as a public speaker, I connect with audiences through real talk—unfiltered, energizing, and grounded in results. I don’t just motivate; I shift mindsets. Whether I’m speaking to corporate teams, entrepreneurs, or individuals navigating life’s pivots, my message is clear: your current reality does not define your ultimate capacity.

As a certified life coach, I work directly with individuals who are ready to stop playing small. My coaching style is strategic, unapologetic, and deeply rooted in empathy. I help people dismantle mental blocks, build sustainable habits, and move with purpose. It’s not about hype it’s about accountability, clarity, and lasting change.

What sets my brand apart is its authenticity. I bring the same energy to the boardroom as I do to the stage and the coaching session. I’ve built my platforms on truth, strategy, and execution..

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three core elements have been instrumental in shaping my journey: resilience, strategic thinking, and people mastery.

1. Resilience
This isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about standing tall when everything around you is uncertain. Entrepreneurship and leadership are not linear journeys. You’ll face rejection, setbacks, and tough calls. What set me apart was the ability to recalibrate without losing momentum.
Advice: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Build your emotional stamina. The earlier you embrace challenges as data—not defeat—the stronger your foundation becomes.

2. Strategic Thinking
Success is never random—it’s engineered. Strategic thinking allowed me to anticipate change, align my actions with long-term outcomes, and pivot quickly when necessary. It turned obstacles into stepping stones.
Advice: Start asking better questions. Learn to zoom out and connect dots. Study trends, read widely, and surround yourself with mentors who challenge your perspective. Strategy is a muscle—build it daily.

3. People Mastery
At the core of every business, brand, or movement is people. Leading teams, understanding clients, building trust, and managing human dynamics are non-negotiables. My ability to listen, coach, and lead with empathy has opened more doors than any credential ever could.
Advice: Never stop developing your emotional intelligence. Get curious about people. Learn to lead without ego. The more you understand others, the more impact you’ll create.

For anyone early in the game: master your mindset first, skillset second. If you commit to growth, stay humble, and move with intention, you’ll

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

One of the most impactful things my parents ever did for me was not doing everything for me. They allowed me to fall, fail, and figure it out. And in hindsight, that was the greatest gift they could’ve given me. They didn’t try to shield me from every consequence or micromanage my path—they gave me space to build my own resilience muscle.

There’s a common narrative that if our parents had cushioned more blows or protected us from adversity, we’d be better off. I believe the opposite is true. When you’re forced to get up on your own, to navigate through the rough terrain without a safety net—that’s when you discover your strength, grit, and voice.

I’ve seen firsthand how overprotection can cripple potential. Kids who are overly pampered often struggle when life actually demands something from them. But those who’ve had to struggle, those who’ve had to dig themselves out? They come out sharper, stronger, and more grounded in who they are.

Resilience isn’t inherited—it’s built. And sometimes the best thing a parent can do is step back and let life teach the lesson.
