We recently connected with Michelle Babb and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
As a mind-body nutritionist, I think it’s important for me to walk the talk. I’m very mindful about how I nourish myself and I try to stay consistent with my shopping, prep, and cooking routine. I make it a priority to eat a wide variety of plant-based foods, wild caught fish, and I try to eat seasonally and locally whenever possible. I also stay very active. I’m a runner, and that’s a big part of how I stay fit and relieve stress.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have a private practice in West Seattle where I see clients one-on-one to work on using nutrition as the foundation for health and wellness. I utilize my functional medicine training and a passion for food and cooking to teach clients the art of self nourishment. In my practice, I specialize in inflammatory conditions, digestive disorders, sustainable weight loss using an anti-dieting approach. I also teach cooking classes with an emphasis on health and wellness and I’ve written three books; “Anti-Inflammatory Eating Made Easy,” “Anti-Inflammatory Eating for a Happy, Healthy Brain,” and “Mastering Mindful Eating.”
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I completely changed careers when I was 35 years old. I was working at a PR agency and I went back to school to get my master’s of science in nutrition and become a registered dietitian. I think my communication skills from my previous career were an asset for me in my journey, and I believe my determination and creativity also got me through this fairly major life change. For those who might be unhappy with their current line of work and are thinking of making a career switch, I would say that this was the smartest decision I ever made and I don’t have an ounce of regret. I absolutely love what I do and am eternally grateful that I get the opportunity to guide people on their wellness journeys and share in their successes.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
As I continue to cultivate and teach skills around mindfulness, I would love to collaborate with other practitioners who teach mindfulness, meditation, or yoga and/or mental health practitioners who can provide guidance to clients on stress management, relaxation, and reduction of anxiety. Would be happy to connect via email mbabb@EatPlayBe.com.
