Meet Michelle Gravallese

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle Gravallese. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle below.

Michelle, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I come from a unique family — not just one, but two sets of twins! I have a twin sister and twin brothers, only two years apart. Growing up as a twin often came with constant comparisons, which at times led to struggles with self-esteem and confidence. What always made me feel beautiful and empowered, though, was receiving beauty services. That experience sparked my passion for the beauty industry. I began working as a teenager and became a Maryland licensed Nail Technician at just 18 years old. Beauty gave me the confidence I didn’t always have, and now I’m grateful to give that same feeling to others — helping them feel beautiful, confident, and seen through my work as both a mentor and licensed Master Esthetician.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a licensed Master Esthetician based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, with over 15 years of experience in the beauty industry. My career began during my senior year of high school, when I enrolled into a career and technology education program specializing in Nail Technology. By 18, I became a licensed Maryland Nail Technician and started working humbly as a spa attendant — cleaning sandals and folding robes. From there, I advanced through roles in front desk coordination, nail and skincare service providing as an Esthetician, and ultimately into spa leadership and management as a Master Esthetician.

I remain actively engaged in the professional beauty community and proudly collaborate with leading skincare brands, including Hydrafacial and SkinCeuticals. Over the years, I’ve excelled in leadership and management roles, focusing on developing and expanding esthetics departments — from driving sales growth to mentoring and building high-performing service teams. I’ve had the privilege of training and supporting fellow Estheticians in brand protocols and product knowledge, and I served as a preceptor for PRO+ Skin Academy, a Maryland-based esthetics school where students complete their required practical hours under supervision in a real spa setting. I also guest lecture for the academy, teaching students how to leverage social media to build and grow their own professional brand in the beauty industry.

I currently teach a Maryland State Board of Cosmetology–approved continuing education course through PRO+ Skin Academy, helping licensed Cosmetologists, Nail Technicians, and Estheticians strengthen their online presence and convert followers into loyal clients.

Today, I practice as a solo Master Esthetician at Potomac Dermatology and Skincare Center located in Potomac, Maryland, under the leadership of Dermatologist Dr. Lily Talakoub, who is also the founder of McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center in McLean, Virginia.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three key skills essential for growth are listening, being resourceful, and staying coachable. Listening is critical for effective conflict resolution, whether in customer service or working in team environments, as for listening and understanding different perspectives to build collaboration and trust. Resourcefulness and flexibility are equally important when navigating challenges and finding solutions. Lastly, being coachable enables you to continuously develop new skills, embrace fresh ideas, and grow into a stronger, more effective service provider and leader.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Growing up with two sets of twins just two years apart, the most valuable lesson my parents taught me was the importance of hard work. Coming from a middle-income family where we shared everything, I learned early on that if I wanted something, I had to earn it myself. I started working at 15 and have worked hard for my achievements. I’ve never shied away from long hours or weekends — working open to close — and I approach life with zero entitlement and a deep sense of gratitude. Nothing has been handed to me. It took me five years to earn my two-year degree, seven years to complete my four-year degree, and over 15 years to build my career in the beauty industry — but that journey is what shaped my resilience, determination, and unwavering work ethic.
