Meet Michelle John

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle John. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle below.

Hi Michelle , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from my Grandmother and my Grandfather , it was a gift that was handed down to me !

My Grandparents were immigrants who travelled to London, England from the caribbean island of St Vincent in 1960 to help to rebuild the UK , Many people from the British colonies were asked to come to help in the efforts to rebuild the UK after the damage done during World War 2 .

My Grandmother and Grandfather worked together to create a better life for there children , leaving behind their home and loved ones they had a vision to give their children , grandchildren and generations to come opportunities they did not have as young people . They were taking a huge leap of faith but they were committed to making it work for them and their family , i really admire how they persevered through adversity , discrimination ,racism , accessing housing , employment and healthcare , despite these challenges they stayed focused on their goals and worked hard to acheive them .

They taught me to work hard and to develop my ability to a point of excellence that can not be ignored or denied , and when people refuse to allow you to be seen or heard you just going keep working hard and your hard work will always pay off !

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Whether its singing as a child in my local church Gospel Choir or recording and touring with stars including Eric Clapton , Annie Lennox , George Michael , Celine Dion ,Mariah Carey , Mary J Blige or Andrea Bocelli i just love to sing !!!

Ive been fortunate to perform for the late Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and at The White House for former President Barak Obama .

So far i have released 1 EP , 2 Albums and 5 Singles ….. so im just getting started ! All my music is available digitally but also i produced a special edition of my latest album on vinyl for vinyl loevers like myelf ! Available to order worldwide at : Meeshjohn.com

Most of all i love performing my own self penned music and sharing my songs with a live audience . There’s something very special that happens when other people connect to the message in your music – i hope my music brings healing and joy to the heart of the listener .

I just completed a tour of Europe with BBC Planet Earth III Live and The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and my 1st UK Tour as a Solo Artist , my plan now is to take my music into the USA and other countries !!

Next concert will be at the Iconic London Venue The Union Chapel on 28th September .

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three of the most important qualities as a succesful singer ive learned over these last 25 years are

1. Doing what it says on the tin and then add a little sprinkle of seasoning !!!

In other words if you”re hired to be a backing singer as i was for many years then do exactly what the artist asks of you , learn the material , know the lyrics , give 100% performance level even in rehearsals this will develop a level of trust and you will get booked again and again and also be brave enough to add a bit of your personality and flare that makes what you bring to the table something unique !

2. Confidence comes from KNOWING .

Know your Stuff !! Know your Ability , Know your Limits .

3. Treat Everyone with Respect .

There are people on and off the stage whose contribution and the role that they play helps you to do what you do and be GREAT !! ” Alone we can do so little : Together we can do much ” !!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area of growth over this past year has been my Self – Talk !!

We all have moments of doubts and imposter syndromeand for me this has also been a challenge since embarking on my solo career epecially having such an incredibly successful career as a backing singer .

I often have to remind myself that ” I am Good Enough ” i have something worthy of sharing , I am worthy of the opportunities that i’m given and theres only one of me – thats my superpower – i stopped comparing myself to others and trying to meet the expectations of others and judging myself by the opinions of others .

Now i speak nicely to myself , i do the work that feels right , i’m learning to trust my own instincts , and my gift and the experience i have will do the rest – When I show up .
