Meet Michelle-lee

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle-lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Michelle-Lee, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Many may view being an outlier as a disadvantage or a setback since a path hasn’t been already paved but to me, it’s an opportunity to make the path your own and to set the standard for others. It’s easy to speak about it now that I’ve matured in my purpose. To be honest, I didn’t always feel this way. I would become frustrated that there was no one in my genre that created music like me or questioned my purpose and if it was even possible to write gospel songs that sounded more like R&B or Pop. I wondered if maybe something was wrong with me, or if I was a bad Christian. It would have been easy to shy away from the lyrics, concepts and melodies I heard in my head but the thoughts wouldn’t let me rest. I had to share these ideas. I needed to know if someone would relate to the music I heard in my heart. No longer, could I allow the fear of being rejected or castaway to stop me from sharing this music God engraved on me. I had to be obedient to the call I was given. Even if it was created to help just one person on this earth, I know I have completed my assignment.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a gospel singer/songwriter who loves to create music and various genres, spreading the word of God. I am a Delaware native and love to think out of the box when sharing God‘s word. I was born and raised in church however, I found my personal relationship with God when I became a teenager. I love to create realistic experiences and connections through music.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three most impactful skills that I have come across in my journey is consistency, focus and confidence. Though I can’t say I have mastered any of the three, I am constantly striving to polish and improve my strength in these areas. It may sound cliché, but you have to be consistent to be successful in any area of your life. Know, it may not be 100%. You will have bad days and times where it doesn’t seem worth it, but you have to show up! Your performance may seem trash. Your voice is cracking. The song you wrote is horrible. One thing is for certain, you showed up and put in the work and no one can take that away from you. Your focus is just as important. Remembering your “why” can get you through the toughest of times. There will be moments you want to give up, quit. and where your time and energy doesn’t seem worth it. When you focus on the end goal, you remove the space of inadequacy and doubt. You are on a mission to succeed and there’s no thoughts of negativity that can stand in your way. Lastly, confidence is key. Throughout the years, I have learned that confidence will separate you from the competition. The confidence in your skill will infect those around you and they will be confident in your skill because of how you view you! If you’re not confident in yourself, others will view you exactly how you view yourself.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I LOVE to collaborate with others and am always willing to meet new people to collaborate with. I believe collaborating is the easiest and most effective way to create something new. It’s a way to stretch and expand your horizons in ways you never thought of on your own. If you’re looking to connect, feel free to DM me on Instagram @michelleleemusik or email me [email protected]
