We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Miguel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
‘ve learned to be effective and successful by first accepting myself for who I am, embracing my uniqueness. The second step was learning to be okay with being different in my own way, knowing that it doesn’t diminish my worth. The third step was understanding that some people will appreciate me for being authentic, while others might dislike me for the same reason—and that’s okay. Lastly, I’ve learned to read the room, understanding when to give and when to hold back depending on the environment around me. It’s about finding balance and staying true to myself while adapting to what’s needed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Michelle Miguel. Born in a Caribbean Island (Dominican Republic) but currently established in New York. I think I got the love for photography from my Grandma and Mom; they love taking pictures and developing films. My childhood house is full of print photos my grandmother and mom collected over time. Each photo has a story and each story brings a memory. I guess that’s why I like being around cameras and photos.
I have been shooting, as a hobby, since I was in High School but since 2016 I decided to make it a profession. I really enjoy capturing a special moment in time, convert it into a picture, and making it a memory. I will say my style is really versatile. I can go from traditional to candid to avante garde without struggling. I am friendly, talkative and definitely not shy which makes me really easygoing. I believe taking a picture can change the future because you can have a frozen moment that will bring you joy.
I love seeing true feelings through my lens. Thats why weddings are one of my favorites things to photograph, follow by families and meaningful events.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe my outgoing personality, my ability to empathized with others and my will to give it my best are qualities that have shaped me to be the kind of photographer or filmmaker I will love to have myself as a cleint.
To anyone trying to become a photographer or filmmaker, my advices are simple… one: never stop learning, practicing and making mistakes in order to correct them and second: know your worth and be firm with it. You will not be a rookie for ever..so embrace the experience you get with time.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who understands that photos are important because they make you relive a moment in the past. Photos and videos will give bring up feelings, emotions that are deep in your soul and just need a little spark to become a full fire. My ideal client knows that what matters in a photo or video is not the technical aspect of it, but the documenting that one moment in time that will not come back. My ideal client knows that photos and videos are valuable, that is an investment, not a regular expense.
