We recently connected with Michelle Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle , we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I haven’t completely overcome my mental health challenges, as I’ve battled depression since my teens. Some days are difficult, and I may struggle with focus or experience brain fog. On those days, I’ve learned to adapt by giving myself grace and shifting to lighter tasks that require less decision-making, such as reading to improve my skills or organizing files. This approach allows me to keep moving forward without burning out, and it helps me stay consistent over the long term. Persisting through these challenges has taught me resilience, flexibility, and the importance of self-awareness in maintaining my productivity.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a proofreader who helps Christian writers, coaches, and small businesses make their writing and marketing materials professional, consistent, and clear. What excites me most about this work is the opportunity to partner with amazing people and help them share their message with thousands of readers in a way that’s both consistent and impactful.
Clients tell me they appreciate not just my eye for detail, but also my quick response time, fast turnaround, and the encouragement I provide as they move through their publishing or marketing journey. I love being their cheerleader as much as their proofreader!
Right now, I’m offering new clients a free 300-word proofreading sample for marketing content, so they can see the value of professional proofreading before committing.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I think the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are attention to detail, clear communication, and adaptability.
Attention to detail is very important for proofreading, but it also applies to running a business—small things matter. For those starting out, I’d recommend paying attention to the little details in how you present yourself and your work, because they build trust and credibility over time.
Clear communication has also been vital, not just in editing but in building strong relationships with clients. Being prompt, kind, and clear in emails or updates builds trust. My advice to beginners is to treat every message as a reflection of your professionalism.
Finally, adaptability has kept me moving forward. Every client and project is different, and being open to learning new tools or adjusting your workflow is what makes long-term success possible. For those early in their journey, don’t be afraid to try new approaches—you’ll discover what works best as you grow.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is a Christian writer or business owner who values clear, professional communication and wants their words to reflect excellence. They’re passionate about their message and committed to reaching their audience with clarity and impact. I love working with clients who see me not just as a proofreader but as a partner in helping them share their story or mission with confidence.
I enjoy working with people who take their message seriously and want to ensure it reaches their audience effectively. Supporting them with flawless writing allows them to focus on their mission while I take care of the details.
Oh, and a sense of humor is also a great characteristic!
