We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Oppenheimer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
After dedicating seven years to studying acupuncture and earning my masters in Oriental Medicine, I found myself at a crossroads. While I deeply appreciated the knowledge and skills I gained in the field, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. It wasn’t until I sought solace in painting during study breaks that I discovered where my true passion lay. The act of painting became more than just a hobby; it was a form of meditation, a means of expression that resonated with me on a profound level. Through the strokes of my brush, I found a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I had never experienced before. Despite the years invested in acupuncture, I realized that my heart belonged to fine art. Embracing this realization, I embarked on a journey to pursue my passion for painting, grateful for the lessons learned but eager to explore the boundless possibilities of my newfound calling.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Through my extensive connections with art publishers, I have fostered enduring relationships while also taking on the role of a curator for other artists’ works. This dual role allows me to not only strengthen my ties within the industry but also to promote and share the art of fellow creators with these publishers.
Motivated by a belief in abundance for all, I’ve made the conscious decision to pay forward the support I’ve received by guiding other artists on their paths to success. In an industry often perceived as competitive, my perspective of abundance offers a refreshing approach. By imparting my knowledge and experiences, I aim to assist fellow artists in reaching their aspirations, thereby contributing to the cultivation of a more vibrant and supportive artistic community.
The cultivation of a supportive and vibrant artistic community is paramount for nurturing creativity. In an industry prone to competitiveness and cutthroat dynamics, fostering a culture of abundance and collaboration can have a profound impact.
By sharing resources, experiences, and expertise with fellow artists, I not only empower them to achieve their goals but also foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. When artists support one another, they collectively elevate the entire community, igniting innovation and inspiring future generations of creators.
Furthermore, embracing the notion of abundance in the arts recognizes that success is not a finite resource. It is not a matter of one artist’s gain being another’s loss. Instead, by celebrating each other’s accomplishments and lifting one another, artists can collectively flourish, enriching the artistic landscape with diversity and dynamism.
Ultimately, embodying a spirit of generosity and collaboration not only positively impacts individual artists’ lives but also contributes to the enrichment of culture and society at large.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, an invaluable virtue often underestimated yet essential in any journey towards self-discovery and fulfillment. Along the winding paths of life, one must learn to cultivate patience, to weather storms and savor victories. Patience grants the gift of resilience, allowing us to endure hardships with grace and perseverance. It is through patience that we come to know our worth, recognizing the unique talents and qualities that make us who we are. Comparison, the thief of joy, loses its power in the presence of patience, for we understand that our journey is uniquely ours, incomparable to anyone else’s.
Reflecting on my own journey, three qualities stand out as pillars of strength: resilience, adaptability, and self-awareness. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, proved crucial in overcoming obstacles and staying committed to my path. Adaptability allowed me to embrace change and navigate uncertainty with an open mind, seizing opportunities for growth along the way. Self-awareness, perhaps the most profound of all, enabled me to understand my strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations, guiding me towards authenticity and fulfillment.
For those embarking on their journey, my advice is simple yet profound: cultivate patience, embrace resilience, nurture adaptability, and foster self-awareness. These qualities are not innate but can be developed through practice and intention. Surround yourself with mentors, seek out experiences that challenge you, and reflect regularly on your progress and growth. Embrace failure as a teacher, learn from setbacks, and celebrate small victories along the way. Remember, your journey is unique, and comparison serves only to hinder your progress. Stay true to yourself, trust in your abilities, and have patience—the rest will fall into place in due time
