We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Paget a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I remember being an 18-year old college student needing to decide on a major. It was the first time I put real effort into thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I thought about the type of work I wanted, who I wanted to work with and what I wanted to get out of my work- my purpose. I had always wanted to help and loved connecting with others. I enjoyed being creative and wanted to find ways of incorporating creativity into my work.
It took many years of learning, trying and making mistakes to find my way. I explored art and psychology as an undergrad, moved to New York City and went to graduate school for social work. I integrated creative approaches with children at public schools, did a yoga teacher training and then explored incorporating yoga and mindfulness into my work with children and families.
Little by little, I was finding my way- exploring my purpose as a therapist in private practice. My years of experience working with parents, as well as my own journey into motherhood led me into the work I am doing now as a perinatal and maternal mental health therapist.
When I think back to my 18-year old self, fresh out of high school and contemplating purpose, I want to tell her it will all work out. I feel confident that, that version of myself would be proud of the journey I took and where I landed.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I feel so incredibly lucky to work with individuals and couples on the journey to and through parenthood. This work feels close to my heart, and I feel especially inspired working with parents around exploring their identity post-parenthood.
I love watching my clients move forward and find joy in their everyday life. Using brainspotting helps get through areas that feel stuck, as well as trauma, giving us the ability to move forward with a new perspective.
There were so many of my clients who discussed struggles they went through with their partners in their entry into parenthood that I decided to create a class to help move through this huge transition. I’m excited about my upcoming workshop, Prepping for Parenthood, at Belly Bliss in Cherry Creek, Denver, that will take place from 1-3pm MDT on Sunday, April 6th, and Sunday, June 29th, 2025.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If I had to pick the three skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful, it would surely be my 300-hour yoga teacher training, my perintal certification course and the many trainings I completed in brainspotting. These all shaped who I am as a person and as a professional.
To other folks who are early in their journey, my advice is to stay curious about how your core values impact your work and never stop learning.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
It is a lot to manage my work as a mother of two and as a therapist in private practice. The mental load can be overwhelming, and I like to think proactively and reactively when I am working to manage stress. I plan for yoga and exercise regularly, which helps me stay more regulated throughout the day. I also try my best to structure my schedule in a way that reduces rushing, which for me is a big stress trigger. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I take a walk, turn on biolateral sound or do deep breathing. Sometimes, if my kids are around, we turn on music and dance. Shaking out the stress works!
