Meet Miguel Escalante

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Miguel Escalante. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Miguel below.

Miguel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My purpose is to pass down essential water safety skills to our youth and uplift communities of color by promoting lifelong knowledge and confidence in the water. Every time I see a child hanging on to a wall or sitting by the edge of a pool with a nervous look, this drives my purpose…

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I began my journey in aquatics in 2006 when I took on my first role as a lifeguard, primarily involved in overseeing recreational activities and ensuring the safety of swimmers in a community center. What initially started as a job quickly sparked a deep passion for swimming and community engagement. As I continued to learn and grow in this field, I realized the transformative power of swimming and its potential to make a difference in the lives of young people. This led me to pursue opportunities to teach children from underrepresented, economically disadvantaged communities through various nonprofit programs.

Working with these children became a deeply personal and rewarding experience. I witnessed their progress firsthand as they not only developed critical swimming skills but also gained confidence and resilience. Many of these young swimmers advanced so rapidly that they earned spots on a competitive swim team. Seeing their growth and potential inspired me to continue advancing their skills. Eventually, I joined that same competitive swim team as a coach, where my dedication and commitment led to my promotion to head coach.

Today, I have the privilege of managing a swim school that serves approximately 400 students. Our program is designed to be inclusive and supportive, offering scholarships to children in need so they can access life-saving skills and the benefits of competitive swimming while also introducing opportunities of development. My goal is to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent any child from discovering their potential in the water.

Beyond my leadership role at Splash Fit Swim Club, I continue to coach an age-group club team, where I guide young swimmers through their formative years in the sport. I also coach an NCAA Division III women’s swim team, helping collegiate athletes reach their full potential both in and out of the pool.

The most rewarding aspect of my work is the opportunity to create meaningful opportunities for our youth. It’s not just about developing their swimming abilities—it’s about shaping their character, instilling values like discipline and perseverance, and helping them grow into confident, well-rounded individuals who will carry these lessons throughout their lives.

At Splash Fit Swim Club, we go beyond teaching swimming. Our program is a holistic experience that emphasizes culture, family, and work ethic. We create an environment where young people feel supported and inspired, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Swimming becomes more than a sport; it becomes a vehicle for personal growth, connection, and empowerment.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Discipline- Find something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Commitment- I embrace the challenges that come with the work that I do. Remain committed regardless.

Openness- Having the ability to change, adapt or accept criticism in order to progress.

How would you describe your ideal client?

An ideal Splash Fit member is a parent who values commitment and consistency, recognizing the importance of instilling discipline and motivation in their child from an early age. This foundation not only supports their child’s growth in swimming but sets them up for future success in all aspects of life.

At our club, we’ve witnessed incredible journeys—from toddlers splashing around with floaties to those same children growing into lifeguards, instructors, and even coaches.
