We recently connected with Miguel Muzquiz and have shared our conversation below.
Miguel , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
There are tons of ways to boost your confidence and self-esteem! A big thing for me was picturing how I wanted to feel—strong, fit, determined, and successful. I used to weigh 260 pounds and worked as a DoorDash driver, making $120 a day for 12-hour shifts, but I knew I needed a change! I started enjoying little things in life, like solo movie nights, eating out, and kayaking a 7-mile stream every other day. Kayaking with audiobooks helped me truly understand who I was as a person and how my past as a kid affected me. It also helped me understand the skills I needed to succeed in different fields of work, from small-time side hustles to wholesaling real estate, flipping couches, and building my photography business. This really helped my mental game and outlook on how I wanted to live my life. It built my confidence so much that taking action became easy! Give yourself affirmations every day. Keep telling yourself that, no matter what anybody else thinks of you, you are still good enough, and you will be the best at whatever you want to be! Set a goal and go for it, even if it feels impossible; you’ll believe in it eventually, and that’s the key to building your self-esteem and confidence.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I do photography/videography for people in Austin, from clubs and private events to Yelp and Real Estate. I started my journey into photography a year and a half ago for a DJ named Ganimal at a club called Highbrow Lowbrow. At first, I started photography just so I could get into clubs for free, but after my first night taking photos, I knew I wanted to capture moments when everyone was at their happiest, enjoying unforgettable memories with friends or family, or laughing about a joke they’d forget the next morning. I wanted people to love how beautiful they look at their happiest and to remember it forever. I always tell everyone I work with that a friend is better than a client. I want you to enjoy the work we are creating more than feeling like it’s just something that needs to be done. I want to help everyone feel at ease when they have me as a photographer/videographer and to have trust in me to capture your event, party, or building and do my absolute best to achieve the best outcome that works for your story!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I would say the three things that helped me most in improving my business and striving to do better for myself were hard work, having a dream, and networking. My advice for people starting their journeys and trying to improve themselves or their companies would be to network with those around them, share their dreams, and recognize that success is rarely achieved alone. The best way to start putting yourself out there is to join groups in your field and learn from others to improve yourself and your work. Combining this with hard work and a dream will allow you to do your best in order to achieve what you are looking for.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that helped me most was *Knowing Yourself* by Roy Baumeister. Listening to this book when I was nineteen greatly improved the trajectory of my life. It allowed me to understand my values and routines on a deeper level, which helped me change tremendously. Little things, such as opening a door with your right hand instead of your left, giving yourself affirmations every morning, or understanding your current thoughts and past experiences, allowed me to dive into my mental state, changing how I view the world and myself. Everything you do, whether changing the course of the world or going out to eat, starts with one little thing. So, make sure that whatever you are doing, no matter how small, is done because you are trying to better yourself, not for someone else.
