We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miguel Zevallos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Miguel, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I realized that working specifically with rock climbers really motivated me to not only get the best results for them, but also motivated me to continue improving in my hobby. Not alot of people are able to to turn hobby/sport into a career, and especially finding climbing in my 20s while in grad school, finding a path to climb and treat exclusively climbers for a living is super motivating.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work with climbers struggling with injuries to get them back on the wall safely and back to the sending their climbs.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Doing research on my own time on the field of climbing injuries, it is not something that is taught in school and so if I wanted to specialize in it I had to put in a lot of effort to familiarize myself with subject matter and go to clinics
2. Staying motivated despite the early social media grind
3. Really throwing myself into all types of events and reaching out to gyms and companies for collabs, alot of them are eager to work with you if you have something to bring to the table! And the exposure and connections are all worth it.
I think the one binding thing that connects all of these points is to stick to your goals, every entrepeneur has a normal day job at first and build up their business on the side.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I would say that I have made a significant effort in truly building up confidence in my recommendations. Being young and coming from a low income background, conversations about pricing, commitment to a program, etc. were always tough and I would simply hope that the patient/client would be very interested in working together and take care of the sales aspect of things on their own. I have come to better understand my role as a clinician and after seeing the results of my work on my client’s return to climbing and overall quality of life, I now feel way more confident in giving my true recommendations and working out a plan with them.
