We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mikaela Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mikaela, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Working in the beauty industry and building relationships with people, really has brought my purpose to my attention. Over time, it grew into something bigger with opening a non-alcoholic bottle shop. This is the butterflies-in-the-stomach kind of work. My purpose is helping people not just feel good on the outside, but on the inside, because that’s what really counts.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Let’s start with what I’ve always known and loved, which is hair. I’ve been a stylist since 2005 and in 2013 my husband, Dana and I took a leap and opened M Salon. I reached a point in my career where I wanted to create my own space, a place where others could feel welcomed, relaxed, heard and a place I’m proud to share with my talented team of stylists and coworkers. I also wanted to work toward something of my own.
Fast forward to 2023, a year of major change and growth. I made the personal decision to live alcohol-free and that choice opened up an entirely new passion and purpose. That’s when Mrs. Sippi was born, a non-alcoholic bottle shop built around connection, community and providing a wide variety of options for individuals who are sober or sober-curious.
My husband and I were able to bring both of these passions together under one roof. A beautiful space that again helps people feel good on the inside and the outside.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Empathy – Understanding and connecting with people has been at the heart of both M Salon and Mrs. Sippi. Listening to clients, colleagues and customers allows me to create experiences that truly resonate.
Initiative – Having the ability to see what could be, taking risks and actually follow through has been essential.
Self-awareness – Being honest about what wasn’t serving me and recognizing when changes were needed has been a huge pivot point in my journey. Whether it was in my career, personal life or lifestyle choices, this awareness has helped me make decisions that align with my goals and values.
My advice would be to be patient. Trust your gut. Your journey is going to be bumpy and there will be setbacks, but if you stay true to yourself and keep moving forward, it’s all worth it in the end.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was give me life. I’ve thanked them throughout my lifetime for bringing me into this world, because without them there would be no me and without me there would be no M Salon or Mrs. Sippi. Having this purpose in life now, to help others like myself (or those who’ve been misled), has been so meaningful and rewarding. While hair is still my number one passion, I feel a strong calling to speak out about alcohol, to show that it’s not what the ads and marketing make it out to be and it can be a real problem. I’m here to make a difference. But at the heart of it all, the gift of life my parents gave me will always be the most impactful thing.
