Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikayla Pock . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mikayla , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience has come from a traumatic car accident that happened my senior year of high school. That was the biggest, scariest thing to happen to me, and totally shifted my perspective on life going forward.
Being able to go through such a tough time and not only make it out but come out feeling stronger than ever made me realize that the tough moments in life, no matter how big or small are the moments that create who you are as a person and allow you to become stronger.
So whenever difficult times arise, I try to remind myself that this too shall pass and I will learn and/or become a stronger human being because of this.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have always been a lover of movement and have had an extreme passion for helping others. After my traumatic car accident, being in a wheel chair for 3 months and relearning to walk and move and trust my body, I saw movement in a new light. I also understood what it meant to fear movement, and not trust my body to do what I wanted from it. From this realization, lots of personal self work, and learning about how the human body moves in school, I knew that this was something I wanted to form into a career.
Not enough people talk about movement for functionality, not just for how our body looks on the exterior. So many us of have aches and pain and discomforts that we relate to aging, when in reality-there are things we can do to prevent and/or regulate the amount of tension and discomforts we feel on a daily basis.
That’s where I come in. I focus on corrective exercise, functional training (which is basically training for the things you do in your everyday life), mobility (which helps create more space for strong and controlled movement) and balance! Getting into movement especially if you are coming from a place of uncertainty in your body can be super hard! My job is to help guide you. Program workouts specifically for your body and your needs, and allow you to regain trust and confidence in moving throughout your life!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think 3 things that have been the most impactful for my journey have been: 1. Trusting the process (knowing that life is full of ups and downs and learning to ride the waves of life)
2. Little tiny actions are huge in the long run (finding small healthy habits for whatever your goal is and sticking with them as consistently as possible)
3.Empathy (seeing where people are coming from, and doing my best to listen and understand as best I can)
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed, the number one thing I do is focus on the present moment. Focus on my breath. Focus on all of my senses. Feeling overwhelm can lead to lots of anxious thoughts for me of all the things that could go wrong in the future. The more that I can focus on what is happening around me NOW, the less stressed and anxious I feel about all the things happening in the future.
